Providence ho I Stringer Henry, farmerLITTLE BUDWOBTH (formerly called Budworthin-the-Frith)is a township, village and extensive parish,4 miles south-east from Delamere station on the <strong>Cheshire</strong>Lines railway, 2 south from Whitegate station on theWinsford branch of the London and North Western railway,and 4 east-north-east from Tarporley, in the Eddisburydivision of the county, Eddisbury hundred andpetty sessional division, union and county court districtof Northwich, rural deanery of Middlewich andarchdeaconry and diocese of Chester; it was formerlya part of the parish of Over, and is described as suchin the charter for endowing the bishopric of Chester,38 Hen. VIII. (1546-7). By an Order of the <strong>County</strong><strong>Council</strong>, confirmed by Local Government Board OrderNo. 28,045, Oulton Lowe was in 1892 added to LittleBudworth for civil purposes. The church of St. Peter,formerly belonging to the Benedictine nunnery of St.Mary, at Chester, is an edifice of stone, consisting ofchancel, nave and an embattled western tower, containinga clock and 5 hells: the nave was rebuilt in 1800, pursuantto the desire of Ralph Kirkham esq, of Manchester,who was educated at the school within this parish, andleft ^1,000 for that object: the church affords 200sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. Theliving is a vicarage, net yearly value ;^225, with residence,in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and heldsince 1904 by the Eev. Bernard Norman Atkinson M.A.of tbe Victoria University, Manchester, and B.D. ofDurham University. A sum of ;£'4oo was left byEalph Kirkham esq. and the interest ot ;^io yearly,designed for the education of poor children of theparish, has been transferred to the Education Authorityof the <strong>Cheshire</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> by the Charity Commi.ssioners.Kirkbam's benefaction of ^^30 yearly isfor distribution in money and clothing: there is also asum of £g, arising from land in Duddon, which is givenin money for coal in February of each year. An almshousewas erected here about 1740 by Dame IsabellaDodd, who also endowed the same with an incomederived from a house and land, now (1906) producing;^2i8 yearly; the building is arranged to hold 6 poormen and 6 poor women of the parish, the former receiving3s. and the latter 3s. 6d. weekly, in additionto which each inmate has coal, medical attendance,£1 IS. yearly for clothing, and a Christmas gift of2s 6d. In thereign of Henry VI. WiUiam del Mere was succeeded inthe lordship of the manor by his sister Margaret, wifeof Walter Troyford, who sold it in 1431-2 to WilliamTrowtbeck esq. together with a fourth of the manorsof Little Neston and Hargreave, for 1,000 marks(;^666 13s. 4d.). Certain lands, however, in Budworthcontinued for several generations vested in the femaleline of Grosvenor. Budworth remained in the possessionof the Trowtbeck famUy till the death of Adam Trowtbeckesq. of Moberley, who, in the reign of Henry VIU.left his daughter Margaret, wife of Sir John Talbot kt.of Albrighton, Salop, sole heiress. Budworth thaipassed with other estates to the Talbots, of Salwarp,Worcs, Earls Talbot and subsequently Earls ot Shrewsbury; but the share of the forestership was aold to theDones of Utkinton in the time of Henry VIH. TheEarl of Shrewsburv and Talbot K.C.V.O. who is nofflord of the manor, and Sir P. H. B. Grey-Egerton bart.are the chief landowners.
