CHESHIRE.CHELFOBD is a parish, township and village, on theroad from Macdesfield to Knutsford, with a station onthe Crewe and Manchester section of the London andNorth Western railway, 9 miles north-west from Congleton,14J from Crewe, 35 from Chester, 5 south-eastfrom Knutsford, 6J west from Macclesfield, 16J fromManchester, loj from Stockport, 9f from Sandbachand 171! from London, in the Knutsford division of thecounty, petty sessional division of Prestbury, Macclesfieldhundred, union and county court district, andin the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Macclesfieldand diocese of Chester; it was formed into a consolidatedchapelry April 9th, 1880, and comprises OldWithington and the greater part of Snelson in theancient chapelry of Peover. The church of St. Johnthe Evangelist, erected in 1776, on the site of an earlierstructure of the 13th century, is an edifice of brickwith stone facings, in the Early English style, consistingof chancel, nave and an embattled western towerwith pinnacles and octagonal spire, and containing aclock and 6 bells; the tower was added in 1840: thestained east window is a memorial to John Dixon esq.of Astle Hall, who died in 1875, and there is anotherto his wife. The register of baptisms dates from theyear 1679; marriages and burials, 1674. The living isa vicarage, net yearly value ^^320, with residence, inthe gift of Lieut.-Col. George Dixon, and held since1907 by the Eev. Colin Edward Beever BeU M.A. of St.John's College, Cambridge. There is a Parish hall.The charities for distribution in money in this townshipamount to about ;^i4 yearly. The <strong>Cheshire</strong> Gentlemen'sCricket Ground, opened in 1861, is close to thestation. Astle Hall, thd seat of Lieut.-Col. George DixonD.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner,stands in a weU-timbered park of about 120acres, on the north side of whieh is a beautiful sheetof water. The soil is sand; subsoU, sand. The chiefcrops are oats, potatoes and turnips.
