ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT11.1 Your Company has been accredited with ISO 14001-2004 Environment Management System.11.2 Your Company is committed to preserve the Ecologyand prevention of pollution in its mining/manufacturingactivities. In this direction, a number of environmentalinitiatives have been taken during the year yieldingpositive results. The highlights of this area are asunder : -(a) Constructed Shed No.4 for additional storage of1000 tons of Coke and Shed No. 5 for storingof Bentonite to prevent fugitive emissions duringhandling of Coke and control air pollution.(b) Asphalting of 450 meters internal road has beencompleted to prevent dust generation duringmovement of heavy vehicles.12. SAFETY12.1 Although the mining activities at Kudremukh havebeen stopped with effect from 01-01-2006 as perthe Hon’ble Supreme Court’s verdict, regular safetyinspections are being carried out to ensure safety andoccupational health of employees engaged in upkeepand maintenance of Mining Equipments, essentialservices like water pumping, watch and ward etc.Safety awareness training is being imparted to the newcontract labourers who are coming for dismantling thestructures and other related works at Kudremukh.12.2 Workers participation in Safety Management System isone of the important criteria adopted by the Company.Area wise Safety Committees are formed. Workersparticipation in these Safety Committees is ensured. TheCommittee meetings are conducted at regular intervals.(c)(d)(e)(f)(g)Additional water sprinklers have been installedand continuously operated for suppression ofdust in the plant premises in addition to mobilewater sprinklers.Several wet scrubbers, bag filters and multicloneshave been installed and maintained tocontrol the dust emission effectively in the plant.Constructed 4 Nos. settling pits along withstorm drain facilities. This would facilitatesettling of suspended solids carried away bythe storm water. The settled solids will be desiltedduring dry season or pumped back in tothe process stream by submersible pumps. TheIron Ore fines carried by the storm water aretrapped in the settling pits and recovered furtherfor processing.A pit with pumping arrangement has beenprovided in the Cooling Pond area forrecirculation of the spillages from Shed-1 andShed-2 area and to conserve water.Extensive de-silting operation has been taken upduring 2012-13 and about 39,833 MT of materialhas been reclaimed from cooling pond and usedin production of Pellets. De-silting operation hasfacilitated to hold more water in cooling pond.This would reduce ultra fines reporting in thecooling pond overflow.12.3 Safety inspections are carried out regularly by thesafety Officer along with Safety Committee members.Safety points are discussed in the Safety meetingsheld once in three months. Suitable action is taken forimplementation of the shortfalls if any for improvement.12.4 Various training programmes are being conducted toinculcate safety consciousness and to develop humanresources. Refresher training covering their area ofworking, First Aid Training, Fire Fighting, Awarenessprogramme on Quality, Environmental, Occupational,Health & Hazards, Vigilance Awareness, SustainableDevelopment, Lecture on Productivity week andcovered 2758 mandays of training for workmen, 1091mandays for Executives and 510 mandays trained forcontract workers. This excludes employees nominatedto various external Seminars, Workshops/Training.12.5 As the Mangalore unit is under the aegis of the FactoriesAct from January 2006, the National Safety Day &Safety week is celebrated from 4th to 10th Marchevery year. National Safety Flag hoisting, competitionon Safety poem, Safety slogan & Drawing competitionin Hindi, English & Kannada languages are conducted.13.
