WALKING THE BEAT...WHAT’S HOT...NITON TACTICAL PATROL VEST“There’s man all overfor you, blaming on hisboots the fault of hisfeet” (Samuel Beckett)If you have faulty feet but haveto spend all day patrolling, orthotic insoles could be justthe thing to transform yourboots into the comfortable andsupportive footwear you need.FLAT FOOTGOOD FOOTHelps to banish those painsin your heel also called‘Policeman’s Heel’Foot Science Insoles fitprecisely, without trimming, invirtually all boots, work shoesand trainers to provide a degreeof support and comfort. Bestof all they are indestructiblein normal wear, unaffected bymoisture and hygienic (withanti-microbial agents in thematerial) and each pair ofInsoles comes with a lifetimeguarantee.• Machine washable - lowodour properties• Silver based anti-microbialagents embedded into thematerial help keep yourfeet healthy• Environmentally friendly -100% of the material canbe recycledThe Foot Science OrthoticInsole was designed byinternationally recognisedPodiatrists and Biomechanicsexperts at the University OfSalfords School Of Podiatry- the largest in Europe. TheInsole has been clinicallydesigned and biomechanicallyproven to support the arch ofthe foot and control excessivefoot movement (particularlyover-pronation), making thefoot and lower limb more stableand helping to prevent manytypes of foot and lower limbinjury. The Insoles are nowwidely used by Podiatrists andPhysiotherapists across theworld and are now availabledirect to the Law Enforcementprofessionals though Niton999.Professor Chris Nester and PhilLaxton (lecturer and practicingpodiatrist with over 30 yearsof clinical experience treatingsports injuries) headed up theproject. Phil says “walkingand standing for prolongedperiods of time combined withintense bursts of activity placesignificant stresses and strainson the feet and lower limbs”.Podiatrists and Physiotherapistsrecognise that individualswith pronated (flat) feet areparticularly prone to pain underthe heel (plantar Fasciitis -policeman’s heel) in the arch ofthe foot at the front of the shinand knee (runners knee) andAchilles tendon problems. Inaddition feet can ache and feeltired after prolonged periods ofactivity.“In all cases a Podiatrist woulduse this Insole to alter footbiomechanics and improvesymptoms. We have been usingthem widely in our clinicsincluding many police officerswith great success.”Being an over-pronator I haveused these insoles myself inmy trainers. I did find that theaching in my hips and lowerback towards the end of a longrun (when I say run I mean halfjog, half walk), was significantlyreduced as the insoles helpedto stop my feet rolling inwards.Unfortunately they didn’t makeme go any faster!Code FS001FROM£26Code TAC127Designed for Security officers, Dog handlers and Search & Rescuewho don’t need baton and handcuffs pouches, but still need theversatility and comfort of a vest. This 4 Pocket patrol vest has been manufactured to the sameexacting standards as the ever popular Niton Tactical Patrol Vest, but we have made it with just 4 large bellowed pockets.• Click-on dock on the shoulders & 50mm reflective tape• 4 Large bellowed pockets measure:3 Pouches 170 x 130 x 50mm ID Pocket : 180 x 130 x 50mm• Velcro adjustments at the sides & shoulders for a flexible fit• 2 concealed front pockets with YKK zip closures• YKK zip closure on the front of the jacket• Velcro patches on the back and left chest allows you to addyour ID or company badges for that professional imageSizes Small - XLarge. Stab, Slash or Spike...PPE GLOVES - WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU?Slash resistant gloves often come with lots of information aboutwhat levels of protection they provide, but no information on whatthese levels or standards mean. Here we hope to clarify some of thejargon so you can choose the right gloves for you or your company. If you requiregloves that arecut, punctureor abrasionresistant, thereare a number ofconsiderations tobe made. If youare buying glovesfor an employeeyou need toensure that theyhave been subjected to European Safety standards andhave been CE marked. If you are buying for yourself, then the gloves do not have to be CEmarked, but you should check that they have been certified eitherto EU or American standards. Gloves that have undergone testsin accordance with EU standards will have an EN code (for slashresistant gloves this is EN388). Gloves tested in America will havean ASTM code (American Society for Testing and Materials). How are gloves tested? To meet EN388 standards, gloves advertised as cutor slash resistant undergo four tests and given aperformance rating of 0 to 5, with 5 being the mosteffective. These tests are:A) Abrasion ResistanceB) Blade Cut Resistance (the only test that can achievea level 5)C) Tear ResistanceD) Puncture ResistanceGloves that have been approved to EN388 standards will displaythe performance levels of the gloves either on the label or on thepackaging. The numbers will always appear in the same order toindicate which test they apply to - A, B, C, D - and will usually showunder the EN388 logo or listed as ‘rating’.It is important to remember that all gloves of thiskind are advertised as resistant and not proof.TESTING SHOULD ALWAYS BEDONE BY PROFESSIONALS!PAGE 8These ratings can provide a guidewhen buying protective gloves, butit must be remembered that thisis only an indicator of how wellthe glove will perform. Each testis performed with an item, suchas a blade that is standardisedso that each test can be easilyrepeated under the same clinicalcircumstances. The tests are notcarried out with a variety ofblades, nor is the puncture testcarried out with a selection ofdifferent gauge needles, metalor wood splinters etc.NITON999 PRODUCT NEWSStab, Spike, Slash has it been tested...What Does it all Mean? The Abrasion TestThe glove material is fixed into place and a standard abrasivematerial is moved in a circular motion over the glove. The samespeed and pressure is always applied. The performance level is thenbased on the number of cycles required to abrade the material.LEVEL 0 1 2 3 4 5ABRASION RESISTANCE

What Cut Resistant Fabrics Are Available? There are several materials inproduction that are resistant to cuts andabrasions. Perhaps the most commonlyknown is Kevlar, developed at DuPontand commercially available since theearly 1970’s. Kevlar is part of the aramidfamily of synthetic fibres, and is acceptedto be 5 times stronger than steel. Kevlaris also naturally fire retardant. Some of the newer fibres suchas Ultra-High-Molecular WeightPolyethylene (UHMwPE), better knownas brands like Dyneema from DSM(available since 1990) and HoneywellSpectra from Allied Signal (introducedin the mid 1980’s), are 10 - 15 timesstronger than steel, and up to 40%stronger than aramid fibres (such asKevlar). As well as being strong andlightweight, Dyneema in particular isnaturally water and UV resistant. Many glove manufacturers like Hatchand HexArmor are now introducingtheir own brands of cut resistant fabrics.HexArmor in particular are looking intohow the construction and layering of thefabrics can improve on cut resistance. Astechnology moves on they are introducingtheir own tests specifically for designedfor the purpose of the glove, such asneedle stick tests on search gloves. However, cut resistant fibres arenearly always used in conjunction withother fabrics such as neoprene, leatheror cotton. This means they could beused as a lining, or that some areas of aglove may be reinforced but not others, depending on what the gloves is intendedfor. For example, a glove specificallydesigned for dog handlers may haveabrasion resistant material across thepalm where the lead is most likely to rub,but not on the finger tips or backs. If you need general protection, lookfor gloves that have cut resistant fibreswoven into the main fabric or as a liner. If you are particularly worried aboutneedle stick injuries, look for gloves thathave extra reinforcement on the sides ofthe index finger and finger tips as this iswhere most needle stick injuries occur.NITON TACTICAL SEARCH LOWCode BS4041HEXARMOURCE4522EN388 Cut Level 5Uses 3 layers of the highest sharps (needlestick)protection technology availableSpecialised gripping surface on palmMechanic’s style gloves with added protection onthe palm and fingers. It’s a Blog...WHEN TAKING A DEEPBREATH IS NOT ENOUGHCONTROLLED BREATHING TECHNIQUES CAN HAVE DAILYAPPLICATIONS THAT CAN HELP YOU PERFORM YOUR JOBBETTER.During my time as a firearms instructor I became interested inbreathing techniques. This led to the realisation that by controllingyour breathing, you not only have better control of your firearm butthere are other benefits too. It’s something that you may have comeacross in your firearms or officer safety training, but I believe that notenough emphasis is placed upon its general use for law enforcement orsecurity officers. There are only two autonomic nervous system actions you canconsciously control; breathing and blinking. Of the two, controlling yourbreathing will be of great benefit during a stressful situation. You candecrease your heart rate by practicing tactical breathing. Regulationof the autonomic system de-escalates the biological-fear response andreturns our higher-level brain functions to full capacity. So, it is oneof the best ways you can prepare yourself to overcome fear in a crisissituation. If you are injured it can also be used to minimise blood lossby achieving a mind-set that controls panic and the often accompanyingrapid heartbeat. The value of good breathing techniques in my opinion can’t beemphasised enough, and the benefits extend beyond stress or injuriessustained on duty. It can also assist you in other aspects of work andhome life to reduce stress and improve mental health, as well ascontribute to better overall physical fitness.Master the TechniqueMartial Artists have known about these benefits for hundreds ofyears. There are any number of techniques out there for controllingbreathing, but in line with my doctrine of keeping it as simple aspossible, this technique is a good place to start. I recommend that youstart with this simple process. The breaths should be deep ‘belly breaths’, that is, during inhalation, your stomach expands like a balloon. Each step is done while mentallycounting to four. The four simple stepsto this breathing are:1234PAGE 104In through the nose, two, three, four.Hold two, three, four.Out through the lipstwo, three, four.Hold two, three, four. The four simplesteps to thisbreathing are:In through the nose, two, three, four.Hold two, three, four.Out through the lipstwo, three, four.Hold two, three, four. The slow full inhaleshould expand thestomach regionwhile the exhalewill return it to thestart position. Thistactical breathingsequence is mosteffective whenrepeated at leastfour times.Although verysimple, thisNITON999 PRODUCT NEWStechnique allows you todo a number of things tohelp calm yourself. Thebreathing itself combinedwith the concentration incounting can help clearyour mind and allow youto focus on the task orsurviving an injury. If youare hyperventilating it’shard to think straight. As you continue thebreathing exercise, youcan lower your heartrate and relax yourmuscles. If you havebeen injured this canslow blood loss. Tensemuscles can make itdifficult to calm down so you can concentrate again. When practising this technique, you’ll soon find that it doesn’t takevery long to start feeling a difference. After about four repetitions ofthis exercise you should notice the relaxing effects. There are othertechniques, some involve different movements in coordination withbreathing, my advice is to keep it simple. With a discreet technique asdescribed above you can use it in as many situations as possible. Whatis most important is that you regularly practice the technique outsideof stressful situations so using it becomes second nature.Keep Calm When Attending IncidentsMuch of a typical officers work can involve varying degrees ofboredom, with the occasional rushes of adrenaline while responding tostressful incidents and dealing with them. When travelling to the call, start conducting the breathing exercise. Despite the sirens, the chatterof the radio and the expectation of trouble, you may find that theslower breathing brings about a calmer mindset and allows you to drivebetter and plan for a focussed response to an incident. At the sceneyour high energy combined with the clear thinking you have attainedfrom controlled breathing, will allow you to handle the situation in thesafest and most professional manner. These adrenaline fuelled responses can cause you physical strain, sometimes unrecognised, so it can be useful to conduct the breathingexercise post incident. You may think you’re fine and feel ok, but it is agood habit to practice this exercise afterwards as well.Stay CoolIt’s not just working the street that can cause stress. There’s plenty ofstress back at the station or office, I often thought more! If you have toexplain your actions at an incident or how you have conducted yourself, you may find you are under particular stress. Prior to explaining youractions or being questioned, conduct the breathing technique.A relaxed mind may help you better recall what took place andhelp you explain in a calm and deliberate fashion. Similarly a publicforum such as a courtroom and the rigorous questioning by lawyers isstressful even for experienced officers. It certainly helps to display aprofessional demeanor, and calm, deliberate and thoughtful responsewhich can be achieved by being relaxed. Controlled breathing beforetestimony can help achieve the right mind-set.Other BenefitsThe more relaxed you are at work can transfer to being more relaxedat home. Because this technique is so easy, you can perform thisbreathing exercise outside of work and teach it to family members.Good breathing exercises have a place in our line of work and I wouldstrongly encourage their use for anyone seeking a healthy way to relax.WWW.NITON999.CO.UKKeep Calm When Attending Incidents- Adrenaline should be a positive!

Something to makeyou chuckle!A police officer attempts to stop a car forspeeding. The driver gradually increases hisspeed until he’s topping 100 mph. He eventuallyrealizes he can’t escape and finally pulls over. The police officer approaches the car and says,“It’s been a long day and shift is almostover, so if you can give me a good excusefor your behavior, I’ll let you go.”The guy thinks for a few seconds and then says,“My wife ran away with a police officerabout a week ago. I thought you might behim trying to give her back!”A boy racer is speeding onmain road.Officer stops him and asks,“Did you see the speed limitsign?”The boy says,“Yes, I just didn’t see you.”USE ME... They protect the wearer and thepublic because they provide accurate, courtadmissible documentation of an event. It’sa fact that complaints, false allegations andpaperwork are all significantly reduced. Why wear cameras?Following the Stacy Bonds case in 2008, Ottawa defenceTamperproof, evidence admissible TheLittle Brother ensures that whateveris seen or heard is captured.lawyers called for all police officers to wear cameras to protect civilians from police whomight abuse their authority. Police had conducted a strip search of Stacy Bonds after shehad been arrested for public intoxication. Ms Bonds alleged that she had been physicallyand sexually assaulted during this search. Fixed cameras in the custody suite showed 4 maleofficers repeatedly knee Ms Bonds, pin her to the floor and cut off her shirt and bra. Had theofficers been wearing body-cams, knowing their actions were being filmed, would they havebehaved in the same manner? At the same time as the Stacy Bonds case the Ottawa Police Association werealready requesting body-cams themselves, to protect officers from false accusations and“frivolous lawsuits”. Particularly in an age of mobile phones and YouTube, body-cams providean unedited, unbiassed and accurate account of events. Every force who has employed bodycams has seen a reduction in the number of complaints made against officers. The chances ofthe wearer being assaulted or abused are also reduced as soon as people are aware that theyare being filmed. The other bonus to video footage is that it is infinitely more reliable thansomeone’s memory, particularly if they are having to testify several months after the event. The Head-CamThe Little Brother head-cam is supplied by a company thatspecialises in mobile, digital evidence gathering technology forlaw enforcement and emergency services personnel. They arebased in the UK, but supply their head-cams to over 50 policeforces around the world.Since the introduction of head-cams, complaints against thepolice in general dropped by 14.3%, with no complaints at allagainst officers wearing a camera. The other advantage of videoevidence is the time saved on paperwork and file preparation –on average 22.4% less time. The Little Brother is a head-cam with advanced digital video andaudio capture. The software is bespoke, customised specificallyfor the requirements of law enforcement, and exceeds all UKHome Office guidelines (both mandatory and desirable). The Little Brother head-cam has a high resolution head camerawhich can be attached to a shoulder or cap mount, or the ergonomically designed head band. Thisallows you to place the camera in a position that suits you both tactically and comfortably. The camera also comes with a 2.36” colour LCD touch screen unit. The screen hasadjustable frame rate, image quality, and 6 resolution settings. Uniquely designed software meansthe user has;• Instant visual display and playback – A USB and an AV cable mean that images can be viewedfrom any device• Internal high capacity, solid state memory• Superior level of password protection – Thedevice can’t be used, settings changed or imagesdownloaded without entering passwords, makingthe device secure and tamperproof• Still image capture & noise cancelling audioLittle Brother can run continuously for nearly 7 hours.Particularly at large scale events (such as a footballmatch, or the up-coming Olympics and DiamondJubilee), a stream of footage is essential for monitoringcrowds and anti-social behaviour. Any incidents can be Code CAM1viewed in context – not just from a 30 second clip onthe internet uploaded from a mobile phone – and can be used alongside CCTVLittle Brother is lightweight, tamperproof and admissible as evidence in court. It saves time andmoney, and more importantly protects the safety and reputation of the wearer and their employer.Niton Tactical often copied OFFICER SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY - DON’TNEVER matched!DELAY ORDER YOUR’S TODAY!PAGE 15Telephone: 01293 549858 NITON999 PRODUCT NEWS
