The Institut’s headquarters are part of the old Hospital de la SantaCreu (now the National Library of Catalonia) and stands alongside the College of Surgery (later the Faculty of Medicine and nowthe headquarters of the Reial Acadèmia de Medicina de Catalunya). Nearby are the Contemporary Culture Centre, the Museum ofContemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) and various faculties of the University of Barcelona and the Ramon Llull University. The Casa de Convalescència, in addition to its historical value as a key Catalan institution, is of recognised artistic importance.Within a solid and beautiful architectural structure, it houses outstanding examples of 17th and 18th Century plastic arts, featuringsculpture, painting (murals and paintings), ceramics and tapestries. Some of the most important sculptors, painters and pottersof the time were employed on the building. The architecture of the Casa de Convalescència is wholly classical, with fewconcessions to the Baroque. The building is simple in its proportions and islaid around a cloister or central patio. Its classicism is seen with particular clarityin the austerity and sober decoration of the outer walls and entrance. Thisis due both to the length of time spent on its construction (it was begun in1629, in the late Renaissance) and to the legatees’ obligation to economise.Few concessions to exuberance and luxury were possible. However, Pau Ferran’sexecutors waived this obligation. They wanted a building that lacked nothingand would be a lasting monument to the generosity of the patron. Thisenabled the Casa de Convalescència to be adorned with some of the most importantceramic sculptures and decorations of the Catalan Baroque.[Guided visits for groups can be arranged. It is the first studythat considers such a long period of time regarding the “White Midi”,the anchor of the political royalist culture of the 19th and 20thCenturies. In this “department-capital” of Lowerd Languidoc, theking’s supporters have hegemony. With the collaboration of theCatholic church, they were able to prevent the possible emergence ofa moderate right favoring the republic. They fought for decadesagainst the defenders of the “Red Midi”.Eusebi Fortuny CapafonsLleida: Universitat de Lleida, 2007216 pages; 17 x 24 cm; softbackISBN 9788484092155CDU: 94Price: 18 ¤In CatalanThis work is an introduction to the sociopolitical and ecclesiastic realitiesof Central America.
