Business News Round-upupby Bill AffleckThere is much talk about small businesses, their problems andtheir importance to the economy. Here are a couple of homegrownexamples.JohnstonWalsh Interior DesignJust a year ago Carol Johnston and Carol Walsh joinedforces to create JohnstonWalsh. Carol Walsh had beeninvolved in building renovation for a number of years andCarol Johnston came from a background in fashion designwith a sure feel for colour, texture and fabrics. Together theycan tackle almost any interior design problem right throughfrom initial consultation and concept development to thecompleted project. For small building projects, such asextensions, they can coordinate the whole project, architects, plan preparation, planning permissions and building, plumbingand electrical contractors, through to completion, ‘ensuringclient peace of mind’. They are very much hands-on. Ourinterview was during the lunch break from a painting projectwith both ladies somewhat besmirched. They also ‘do’curtains and blinds, cushions, wall hangings and digitallyenhanced photographs on canvas blocks from their workshopin Brewery Lane. They claim to beone of a very limited group ofdecorators who wash their dustsheetsusing fabric conditioner and leave thework site as you would really like tofind it. Controlling rats, mice and wasps isn’tquite the simple job it once was. There is a steady flow ofregulations on the handling, storing and use of poisons and onthe disposal of waste quantities and containers. These have tobe read and their compliance is monitored by the Health andSafety people. There are courses on ‘best practice’ whichAshley has taken. There are public liability insurances to bearranged – and between whiles pests to be controlled. Ashleywants to keep his work local but none of the immediate localauthorities sub-contract pest control so he is very muchpaddling his own canoe. Good luck, Ashley! One necessarypreliminary: he has to get the chain back fromthe current holder, somewhere in Yorkshire.Crystal Fountain Village are proudlydisplaying their Health Care Design Award,Winner, 2005, trophy for the best assistedliving/close care home development. Theaward is made by The Caring Business andPinders. Pinders are consultants to the carehome sector and they carry out a series ofextremely thorough investigations beforemaking their recommendation. Alyson Price,Crystal Fountain’s manager, says they prettywell took up the carpets during theirinspection. The village is now completely built andthree quarters of the second phase have been sold.Several of these units were bought ‘off the drawingboard’ with the purchasers having an input into theirdesign. All the new units incorporate the most up todate legislative requirements. The Village providesboth single floor apartments and houses, these withtwo floors and stairs. Of course not all elderly peoplewant stairs and Crystal Fountain still hope toovercome opposition to their plan to build additionalapartments on the old Crown Inn site. CrystalFountain is very, very far from its populist image of adank, expensive, crowded old folks ghetto grimlycrammed into the bottom of a sunless valley; it’s abright, sunny, cheerful place – if you don’t believe itgo and look.Terrascapes LtdHard and Soft LandscapingGILES GRAINGER HNDTel: 01452 740533 Mob: 07866 515715www.terrascapesltd.co.uk
