H O O F P R I N T SV o l u m e X X X I X N o . 2 • P a g e 9Meet Jimmy GoddardManasquan VFW Post 1838 named Jim “Outstanding Citizen of The Year” for 2001-2002. To hundredsof New Jersey Veterans he was known by his stage name “Jimmy Starr” for his work with the musicalduo Country Fair. In 1999, he was named the New Jersey State Elks “Veterans Volunteer of the Year”and again in 2003-2004, he was recognized as Manasquan’s “Elk of the Year” because you could alwayscount on Jimmy Goddard to get the job done. He was always there to help and serve. The New JerseyArmy National Guard thought so too. When he retired in 1998 after 43 years of service, the NJ NationalGuard named an award after Jim, as the best possible way of recognizing those who will attempt to followin his footsteps. The award, “The MSG James R. Goddard, Sr. Outstanding Supply Sergeant Award”is presented annually to the individual selected by the State Logistical Advisory Board for exemplaryservice. Jim set the standard of performance for those to follow. Jim was elected as President of theState Enlisted Association for the National Guard for 3 separate terms and was a member of the ExecutiveCouncil for 21 years. Jim was known to say,” My goal in life is to bring a little joy and happiness tothe faces of our veterans whenever I can.” Jimmy cherished Americanism and he loved serving veteransand special children.I remember when I joined the Elks in 1999. The only person I knew was my sponsor but something greathappened to me one day. I noticed this guy running around like crazy bringing in tables and gettingready to decorate and did he decorate. He told me he was setting up for the Veterans Dance. I told him Iwas not a veteran but would be glad to help. He said “I won’t hold that against you” and shook my hand.We became friends and I served on his Veterans Committee, sometimes attending District meetings withhim. From Jimmy, I learned what Elkdom was all about.
