My fellow members,
On the eve of the new officer's installation,
I am writing to all of you about
my personal Elk history and some of
the programs and objectives that will
be part of the officer's main focus in
the upcoming Elk year.
From the Exalted Ruler
As I stated previously, at the testimonial
dinner, being an officer at the Manasquan
Lodge is all I've known. I
have been an officer for all but five months of my
Elk tenure. Becoming Exalted Ruler in 2011 is
the culmination of six years of learning, growing
and developing into an effective leader for the
Manasquan Lodge.
Some say that six years is too short a time to fully
comprehend Elkdom, and to be an effective Exalted
Ruler. I argue that sixty years is too short
to fully comprehend Elkdom and being successful
is not about time. It is about commitment, desire
and inspiration. In reality, I have been part of the
Elks my entire life. I grew up in the Elizabeth
Lodge #289. You see my grandfather, Dr. Peter L
Ehrhardt, was the Lodge Secretary for 22+ years
and a member for far longer. I watched with
pride as he worked with special children and
other Elk programs. Much of my youth was
spent at lodge functions and activities from The
Farcher's Grove picnic, where I ate as much Jersey
corn as I could muster and later danced the
"Alley Cat" in the bandstand to attending Friday
Night Dinners where our friends and families
would transform into waitresses, chefs and bartenders.
Everyone knew everyone and the lodge
was our extended family, united together for a
common good.
Now jump 30 years, my grandfather long since
passed, and I am sitting in a building on Stockton
Lake, at a flounder tournament called Mr. FATS,
helping friends and neighbors hand out prizes. It
was as if I jumped into H.G Wells' time machine
and landed in 1970's Elizabeth. The lodge was
alive with friends, acquaintances and volunteers
that were working together for a common charitable
cause. I immediately filled out my application
and six years later here I am writing to you about
continuing the tremendous success of our lodge
and renewing and growing our extended family.
As far as goals and objectives for this Elk Year,
Gregg Olivera
the first three are very important.
They are Membership, Membership
and Membership. Our order,
to be blunt, is hemorrhaging and
we need to stop the bleeding. At
press time, the district is at a slight
minus, the state is at a larger minus
and the nation is even larger. Manasquan
continues to be a leader in
membership retention and new
member gains. We led the district with
our 70+ increase. I will challenge the
committee under the new leadership of
Barbara McCredie and this entire lodge to continue
this success. Help us to continue to grow
Next, Public relations, we need to assist Past Exalted
Ruler Bob Monaco in continuing his excellent
work. We needn't be our community's best
kept secret any longer. We are proud of our
charitable work and should share our efforts and
successes.
Lastly, we need new ideas in fund raising and less
reliance on machines. Typical fund-raising techniques
are no longer working consistently. Too
many of our fund-raisers this past year broke
even or made little money for their intended areas.
We need to think "outside of the box". I
urge all of you to help us in this endeavor. Remember,
no idea is a bad idea.
Before I close, I need to thank a few specific individuals.
First, my wife, Lisa, for not only supporting
me throughout my years as an officer but
jumping in an becoming an integral part of this
lodge. I also thank PERs, Scott Jansen, Bob
Monaco and Marita Kresge. Scott for being a
friend and confidant, Bob for seeing an officer in
a new member six years ago and Marita for inspiring
the officer within me.
If anyone has any questions or wants to help
please reach out to me, the officers or the committee
chairs. Thank you all again for this opportunity
and I look forward to working with each of
you throughout 2011-2012.

NATIONAL SERVICE VETERANS COMMITEE
The month of March has seen the passing of the last
American Veteran of WW1 Corporal Frank W. Buckles.
He helped pioneer getting a WW1 Memorial
erected in Washington DC
.
We also have lost this month CSM James Abiline of
the Retired Enlisted Association of the National Guard
and Reserves. We associate ourselves with this organization
by supporting them at their annual picnic in
September.
As we are all aging, we begin to realize the dwindling
members of Veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam
and all those that have passed in the recent so called
police actions that they have given of themselves as all
who have served so that we may enjoy the life and
freedom we have. Let’s not forget them in our
thoughts and prayers.
On a happier note, we will be having the Jim Goddard
Memorial Golf Day at Gambler Ridge on Friday, May
20 th with a 7:45 am start and lunch and prizes back at
the Lodge. The signup board will be in the lobby.
Should anybody have something for a prize please
bring it to the Lodge.
I have received word that the Elks day at the Blue
Claws for Veterans will be on June 26 th . Tickets will
be available after May 1 st .

A MESSAGE FROM THE SPECIAL CHIDLREN’S COMMITEE
On behalf of the SPECIAL CHILDREN’S COM-
MITTEE, we would like to thank everyone who
made the evening of our Annual Charity Ball an
incredible success. Our Charity Ball is always considered
the premier ball in our District and even
throughout the State. This year was no different.
for your donations and support once again. Your
contributions insure that we can continue to support
the special needs of the children and their
families throughout our community for the upcoming
year.
Thank you everyone on the Committee for your
tireless efforts with the ad journal, Helen with the
gift auction, Helen & Jim for the 50/50, Jackie
with banquet, Joanne with the reservations and
everything else that went into making the evening
successful. Sorry for those names I didn’t mention,
but you are all the best!!!!!!
Lisa with the help of Dick and Mary Mercora,
Elsie and Linda, thank you for turning the lodge
hall into a Hollywood Extravaganza. Walking
down the red carpet made everyone feel like a star.
The room shined brightly for Shannon and her
family.
