LESSONZacchaeus Climbs a TreeYear B1st QuarterLesson 2GRACEJesus loves me unconditionally.ReferencesLuke 19:1-10; The Desire of Ages, pp. 552-556.Memory Verse“God is love” (1 John 4:8, NIV).ObjectivesThe children will:Know that Jesus loves them all the time.Feel accepted and loved by God.Respond by thanking God for His love. The MessageJesus loves me all the time.Getting Ready to TeachThe Bible Lesson at a GlanceZacchaeus is a tax collector. He is unfairwhen he charges the people theirtaxes. But when he learns about Jesus andwants to be fair, the people still don’t likehim. Jesus comes to Jericho and seesZacchaeus in a tree. Jesus asks to go to hishouse, showing how much He loves him.Zacchaeus accepts Jesus’ love and forgiveness, gives back the things he has stolen, and he doesn’t take things that don’tbelong to him anymore. This is a lesson about grace.Young children need unconditionalgrace to feel secure. This lesson helpsto teach them that Jesus loves us nomatter what we do and that His loveis a power that changes us, and givesus constant security.30

TWOTeacher Enrichment“Zacchaeus had been overwhelmed, amazed, and silenced at the love andcondescension of Christ in stooping tohim, so unworthy. Now love and loyaltyto his new-found Master unseal his lips.He will make public his confession and hisrepentance” (The Desire of Ages, p. 554).“It is when Christ is received as apersonal Saviour that salvation comesto the soul. Zacchaeus had receivedJesus, not merely as a passing guest inhis home, but as One to abide in thesoul temple. The scribes and Phariseesaccused him as a sinner, . . . but theLord recognized him as a son ofAbraham” (The Desire of Ages, p. 556).Room DecorationsSee Lesson 1. The busytoddler should have been napping.“My truck hot,” he replied.Following him into the room, shegasped. On the bed was a lamp Andrewhad pulled down off the dresser. A littleplastic truck and some crayons weremelting on the bulb. It had burnedthrough the bedspread, two sheets, the mattress pad, and was beginningto burn the mattress!Needless to say, it wasn’t Shelly’scrowning moment of motherhood! Weall have moments of crisis that zap ourstrength and paralyze us with fear. Butno matter how unsafe or naughty ourchildren act, and no matter how weparents respond, God still loves themand us because of His grace. What has been your response toa frightening situation your child hasbeen in? Does how you respond dependon it being innocent curiosityor defiant behavior?33

LESSON 2Week 2My 2-year-old seemed to sail throughthe “terrible twos” without much of afuss. But when 3 hit, things changed. Hebecame very strong-willed. One eveningas my husband was giving him a bath,Carson poured water out of the tub. Myhusband reminded him not to do that.Carson defiantly disagreed out loudand then said, “I’m the guy who blowsout the candle.”What in the world does that mean? myhusband thought.Later when he told me about it, wedecided Carson must be thinking aboutthe song “This Little Light of Mine,”which we had sung at worship thatnight. Carson knew he was beingnaughty like Satan (“Don’t let Satanblow it out. I’m gonna let it shine.”). Atsuch a young age children know whenthey are not doing the right thing!Share about a time when you sawyour child demonstrate their knowledgeof right and wrong. Let’s pray that theHoly Spirit will continue to work on ourchildren’s young minds to convict themof right and wrong.Week 3“As the mothers passed along thedusty road and drew near the Saviour, Hesaw the unbidden tear and the quiveringlip, as they offered a silent prayer in behalfof the children. He heard the words ofrebuke from the disciples and promptlycountermanded the order. His great heartof love was open to receive the children. One after another, He took them in Hisarms and blessed them, while one littlechild lay fast asleep, reclining against Hisbosom. Jesus spoke words of encouragementto the mothers in reference to theirwork, and, oh, what a relief was thusbrought to their minds! With what joythey dwelt upon the goodness and mercyof Jesus, as they looked back to that memorableoccasion! His gracious words hadremoved the burden from their hearts andinspired them with fresh hope andcourage. All sense of weariness was gone”(The Adventist Home, pp. 273, 274).What words of encouragement wouldyou love to hear Jesus speaking to youtoday?Week 4I know how Zacchaeus must havefelt. As my son approaches his fifth birthday,he’s the size of an average 2 1 ⁄2-yearold.It’s hard not to compare his staturewith younger kids. I wonder how it willbe for him when he starts school. He’llsurely be the smallest in his class. Will hebe teased? How will that affect him? Onething is certain, just as in Zacchaeus’scase, Jesus loves my son dearly. It doesn’tmatter if our children aren’t “perfect” inthe world’s eyes. They are in Jesus’ sight.Share ways you are teaching yourchild about Jesus’ awesome love.Week 5 (or optional)When my firstborn was 8 months old,I distinctly remember one beautiful, warm May afternoon. We had walkedto a playground. After swinging andplaying a long time, we started forhome. I carried him and sang “God IsSo Wonderful.” He put his tired, sweatyhead on my shoulder and fell asleep. As I carried my precious son Ithought, Motherhood doesn’t get muchbetter than this! I was completely satisfied.I thank God for the moments I havewith my children, sometimes rare in thefrenzied pace of life, but filled with loveand peace. For what wonderful memories oftime spent with your children do youthank God?34
