Junior Activities Convenor
We were sad to say goodbye to Michele
Heggli, who has been a wonderful asset
to the Junior Activities programme. We
welcome Teresa Chu as her replacement.
Now that schools have finished for
the term, our summer programmes are
up and running with a huge variety of
activities for all children.
We do need to reiterate some of the rules regarding Guardians
attending the Club as people may have forgotten these. As you
know, the LRC is a members’ only Club with just a few exceptions
to help members in specific circumstances.
The first of these allows guardians to accompany children to classes
when a member cannot do so and is not at the club. All guardians
must be registered with the Club and always carry their Guardian
Card while at the Club. Guardians
must remain in the waiting room,
with just two exceptions:
1) Guardians of children
under 10 years old
are allowed to
sit immediately
adjacent to the
child’s activity
(eg swimming)
2) Guardians supervising
children aged 6 years or
under in the Kids’ Klub
The Kids’ Klub was introduced to allow members the flexibility
of having guardians take care of young children between classes,
but guardians are not allowed in the Soft Playroom, which is kept
as the only indoor parent and young child play room in the May
Road building. The rules have been amended recently so that the
age for children using both the Kids Klub and the Soft Playroom
is 6 years old and under. Children must always be accompanied
while using these rooms (by members in the soft play room and
by members or guardians in the Kids’ Klub). The Mandarin classes
will no longer be held in the Kids’ Klub although there may still
be an occasional party and we apologise for any inconvenience
this may cause. Guardians cannot use the Soft Playroom if the
Kids’ Klub is closed.
Non-members’ guardians may attend private parties at the LRC if
they are doing so as guests but if they are staying on, must remain
at the party venue, not in the guardians’ waiting room.
Lastly, guardians are not
allowed to use the Junior
Library with children
or any other venue
other than those
s p e c i f i e d
a b o v e .
Security or
other LRC staff
will challenge
guardians who do so.
Finally, a gentle reminder
that LRC parties are a
GREAT option for class
end of year parties!!
WINES OF THE MONTH by Michael Soong
White Wine & Rose Price per bottle
Domaine du Mas Rouge Dry Muscat Vin de Pays d’Oc, Languedoc, France, 2008 – Grape: Muscat à petits grains $155
A very aromatic dry white wine, fruity and minerally. The nose carries aromas of exotic fruits (litchi) and yellow
fruits (peach, apricot). In the mouth, the wine is round with freshness and aromatic persistency, ending on a
delightful citrus note.
Food pairing: Raw oysters and all kinds of raw to lightly cooked shellfish, ceviche, tangy aromatic seafood salads,
steamed prawns, “hargow”, “siu mai” and other steamed Cantonese dim sums with a focus on fresh
shrimp and/or pork.
Quinta do Crasto, Douro, Portugal, 2008 – Grapes: Gouveio, Roupeiro and Rabigato $125
CRASTO comes from the Latin word castrum, a Roman fort. References to Quinta do Crasto date as far back as
the early 17th century, long before the Douro became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The Old
Vine wines are from parcels of old, low yielding vines that are kept back for ageing in French and American
oak barrels for up to 18 months. Vibrant citric colour. Intense aromas of fresh citrus fruit and wild asparagus, well
integrated with mineral notes, resulting in a complex and deep bouquet. Very fresh attack. The medium and well
balanced palate is rich in mineral flavours and fresh acidity. The result is a very fresh, crisp and pleasant wine.
Food pairing: Seafood, chicken, light flavoured duck, salads, BBQ .
Bouchon Superior Reserve White Zinfandel, California, 2008 – Grape: Zinfandel $100
A delicate wine with a touch of light salmon colour; delightfully fruity and soft on the palate, with berry-like
flavours and a hint of ripe pear.
Food pairing: Served well-chilled as a summer aperitif, with a green salad topped with grilled chicken,
fresh fruit salad, simple milk chocolate dessert.
Vynfields Pinot Rosé, Martinborough, New Zealand, 2009 – Grape: Pinot Noir $145
A multi-layered and lingering CERTIFIED ORGANIC WINE that speaks of hot summer afternoons. Pale Pink. Ripe
apricots, strawberries, quince and all-spice abound on the nose and palate. Dry in the mouth with subtle musk and
leather complexities, roasted nuts and a clean finish. Mouth filling body, excellent depth and plenty of personality.
Food pairing: any sweet fish such as smoked salmon, scallops or prawns.
Red Wine
Aromatic Summer Wine Encore
Luciano Landi Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, Marche, Italy, 2009 – Grape: Lacrima $130
Ruby red in colour, this is a soft and seductive summer wine. The nose carries a distinguished floral scent of
violets, rosehips and spices. In the mouth, the wine is smooth and elegant with a distinctive mid-palate of
blueberry and blackberry blending artfully with potpourri, Earl Grey tea, and a touch of sandalwood. Long,
silky finish ending on a lovely bitter almond note with a touch of orange peel.
Food pairing: Fantastic as an aperitif or serve slightly chilled with braised meats, BBQ ribs, grilled eggplant and
salami platters, spaghetti bolognaise, milk chocolate and Acona style dried cod.
Quinta do Crasto, Douro, Portugal, 2007 – Grapes: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca $135
Vibrant and fresh with purple hues. Intense aromas of fruits of the forest like blackberries and raspberries.
A medium bodied palate which is rich in wild berry characters. The wine finishes with great length,
balance and texture.
Food pairing: Seafood, meats, salads, BBQ.
Bouchon IZE Red, California, 2006 – Grapes: California Sangiovese blended with Pinot Noir and Cabernets $80
Dry rose petal colour originated from Sangiovese; fruity aromas and slightly sweet with a clean finish.
Food pairing: Serve chilled as a fun pool-side party wine or with most Asian dishes.
Vynfields Pinot Noir, Martinborough, New Zealand, 2008 – Grape: Pinot Noir $235
Ripe dark berry fruit, plums and a hint of liquorice on the nose that carries through onto the palate with a touch
of chocolate. The palate is elegantly structured with delicate finely grained tannins. A vibrant and accessible
wine that demonstrates an array of delicious juicy fruit and savoury flavours, complex and focused on the palate.
Built to last, but also delicious in its youth.
Food pairing: Peking Duck or a lamb dish.
