Thiscelebrates William Murdock who was apioneer of gas and whose home was thefi rst to be ever illuminated by gas, in theyear 1792. David Newman says: “Red,White and Blue was this years colour themeto partly honour and celebrate the Queen’sDiamond Jubilee.”Thanks Ma’amHarold Starkey and his club, Star Stompers,sent the Queen a handmade card with theirwarmest congratulations on her DiamondJubilee. He told us: “We got the most beautifulreply. In June we held a celebrations lateafternoon tea and evening Line dance with80 dancers. Also in June, one of our dancersJocelyn Lace, was one of the Olympictorchbearers. She was nominated for hervoluntary work as a swimming coach.” StarStompers are in their 15th year so this meanseven more celebrations.12 • August 2012 www.linedancermagazine.com
HappyBirthdayRobbieRobert Lindsay was atan event in Airdrie, NorthLanarkshire recently, wherehe was helping to raisefunds for the Breast CancerUnit at the local hospital.Mary Murray told us: “It wasalso his birthday so some ofhis friends also helped himto celebrate by giving hima surprise birthday cake.I would also like to thankRobert for a great weekend atTynemouth where he taughthis dance, Smoochin’. We allhad a great time.”Rodeo Girl to the rescueLine Dancing DinnerLady Turns 60Rodeo Girl Line Dancing held a special nightfor Roleystone Horse Sanctuary in Bradford.Diane and Donna told us: “This sanctuaryhas been blighted over the last year by theftand arson. The poor horses themselveshave been left to the elements becausethe fences and gates were damaged andleft open. One horse was ill and anotherheavily pregnant, they were found roamingnear by. As yet, they have not found theculprits. So Rodeo Girl and dancers havespent over a year raising funds for sheets,towels, blankets and bric-a-brac, to sell ina local Charity shop for them. Our Fridaynight class held a special fundraising nightrecently and raised £55, another dancerhad homemade jam to sell and raised £15.Rodeo Girl added £30 to this to round itup to £100 in total. Over the year we haveraised over £500 for the sanctuary and thequest goes on. Some donations have beenoffered from far afield even aid from somecaring people from the USA. What we neednow is to catch the people responsible forthis crime, then we can get the sanctuaryback on track. Rodeo Girl and the sanctuarywould like to thank all who participated andare grateful for all donations.”Since they started teaching Line dancing12 years ago Maureen and Michelle havebeen followed by their ‘Line Dancing DinnerLadies’ who attended their first class. Oneof the dinner ladies, Janet, turned 60 in Julyand there were celebrations throughout theclasses as well as week long celebrationsfor Janet with family and friends. The Girlstold us: “Janet is a fantastic example of adevoted Line dancer. She injects laughterand light heartedness throughout theclasses, often singing along or evenadding her own musical accompanimentvia clickers or whistles. She never stopssmiling and she has hardly missed a classover the whole 12 years. We would liketo say a huge thank you for her fun andsupport over the years and wish her manymore fun-filled years of Line dancing!”www.linedancermagazine.com August 2012 • 13
