Great gigantic souls, who feltin their hearts these great ideas, first manufactured thesewords, and at that time many understood their meaning.Later, ignorant people take the words and play upon them,and religion becomes a play in their hands, mere frothywords, not to be carried into practice. It becomes my"father s religion,"our nation s religion," your country sreligion,^ and so forth. It becomes only a phase of patriotism. To bring harmony in religion, therefore, must beYet we will try to study this phenomenon.most difficult.We see that in every religion there are three parts IFirst there is themean in every great and recognized religion.philosophy, the doctrines, the ideals of that religion, whichembodies the goal, embodies, as it were, the whole scope ofthat religion, lays before its votaries and followers, theprinciple of that religion, the way to reach the goal; nextthat philosophyis embodied in mythology. So the secondpart is mythology. This mythology comes in the form oflives of men, or of supernatural beings, and so forth. It isthe same thing as philosophy made a little more concrete,the abstractions of philosophy become concretized in thelives of men and supernatural beings. The last portion isthe ritual. This is still more concrete, forms and ceremonies, various physical attitudes, flowers and incense, andeverything that appeals to the senses. In this consists theritual. You will find that everywhere, recognized religionshave all these three. Some lay more stress on one side,some on the other. We will take the first part, philosophy.Is there any universal philosophy for the world ? Not yet.Each religion brings out its own doctrines, and insists uponthem as being the only real ones.
