THE IDEAL OF A UNIVERSAL RELIGION. 319is called inspiration.So instinct, reason and inspiration arethe* three instruments of knowledge. Instinct belongs tothe animals, reason to men, and inspiration to God-men.But in all human beings are the germs of these three instruments of knowledge. They have got to be evolved,but they must be there. This must be remembered thatone is the development of the other, and therefore doesnot contradict the other. It is reason that develops intoinspiration, and therefore inspiration does not contradictreason, but fulfils. Things which reason cannot o-etare brought to light by inspiration, but do not contradictreason. The old man does not contradict the child butfulfils the child. Therefore you must always rememberthis that the great danger tlies here :Many times instinct is presented before the world as inspiration, andthen come all the spurious claims. A fool or semi-lunaticthinks the jargons going on in his brain are inspirations,and he wants men to follow him. The most contradictory,irrational nonsense has been preached in the world, simplythe instinctive jargon of lunatic brains trying to pass forinspiration.The first test must be that it must not contradictreason. So, you see this is the basis of all these Yogas.We take the Raja Yoga, the psychological Yoga, thepsychological way to union. It is a vast subject, andI will only point out to you .the central idea of thisYoga. There is one method in all knowledge that wehave. From the lowest to the highest, from the smallestworm to the highest Yogi, they have to use the samemethod, and that method is called concentration. Thechemist who is working in his laboratory has concentrated all the powers of his mind, and brought them intoone focus, and thrown them on the elements, and they
