Previously known as “<strong>Stowmarket</strong> Mill Lane DevelopmentBrief” (March 2010).Conservation <strong>Area</strong>: An area of special architectural and/or historical interest, the characteror appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. It is a recognition of thevalue of a group of buildings and their surroundings and the need to protect not justindividual buildings but the character of the area as a whole.Contaminated Land: Land that may have been polluted or harmed in some way makingit unfit for safe development and usage unless cleaned.Controlled Parking Zones: This is an area where on-street parking is controlled. Parkingis only permitted is designated parking bays for certain periods of time, and the remainedof the kerbside space can be controlled subject to restrictions. The main aim is todiscourage commuter and long-stay parking by people from outside an area.Convenience Goods: Retail stores selling everyday essential items, such as food andnewspapers.Cordon Sanitaire: Protected / buffer zone e.g. to keep residential areas away fromnuisances such as noise, fumes, smells from industrial or commercial premises.Core Strategy for <strong>Mid</strong> <strong>Suffolk</strong>: Part of <strong>Mid</strong> <strong>Suffolk</strong>'s Development <strong>Plan</strong>, which sets outthe vision and strategic spatial objectives for the development of the <strong>District</strong>. The CoreStrategy was adopted on 4th September 2008 after it was found 'sound' by an independentInspector appointed by the Secretary of State.County Wildlife Site (CWS): CWS designation is non-statutory but is recognition of asite's high value for wildlife with many sites being of county and often regional or nationalimportance for wildlife.Countryside Villages: These are villages identified in <strong>Mid</strong> <strong>Suffolk</strong>'s Core Strategy (2008)where only types of development specified in Policy CS2 may take place.Cultural Facilities: These include building or structures where a wide range of culturallyrelated activities can be held on one-off or a regular basis.
