WETA Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2011WETA is a not-for-profit media organization dedicated to serving the public. The company holds a community license, a privilege that lays the foundationfor its commitment to be an integral resource to the community and acareful steward of the funds entrusted to the station.National Television ProductionTotal Expense by ActivityWETA finished fiscal year 2011 (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011)with an operating surplus of $5.4 million, and unrestrictednet assets grew by $3.4 million. As in fiscal year 2010,the year’s strong financial results were achieved throughresourcefulness and careful spending. The station’s continuing financial strength is due to a renewedemphasis on the cost-effectiveness of operations andprograms. WETA adopted a conservative approach to capitalinvestments and expansion into new activities. The priorityis to continue to offer excellent service and earn — everyday — the support of audiences and the Greater Washingtoncommunity.WETA Signal Society members. These loyal sustaining donorshave chosen the convenience of automatic contributions, whichallows WETA to realize a greater benefit from their gifts by savingthe costs of processing and mailing renewal notices. In fiscal year 2011, WETA received $1.6 million less inCorporation for Public Broadcasting community service grantsthan in the prior year. These grants have a matching componentand reflect the fundraising successes of prior years. The station’scommunity service grants from the Commonwealth of Virginiacontinued to decline, and it appears probable that these grantswill disappear completely in coming years.WETA is doing well with national television productionactivities, carefully considering the risks associated witheach production and keeping track of how much riskWETA can comfortably assume at any given time. Thestation requires that the financial end of this activitybe sustainable because WETA intends to be a nationalproducer for the long term.PBS NewsHour and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill andNational Journal had solid funding in fiscal year 2011.Ken Burns’s The Tenth Inning aired in September 2010with strong support from corporate, foundation andpublic broadcasting funders.Except for significant fluctuations in the level of nationaltelevision production from year to year, expenses byactivity are fairly stable. Over the past five years, fundraisingexpenses ranged from 17 percent of the total in fiscal year 2007to 13.8 percent of the total in fiscal year 2010. Managementand general expenses are steady at about 2.5 percent.Program expenses were 80.9 percent of total expenses infiscal year 2011, and more than 80 percent of the total ineach of the last five years. In fiscal year 2011, the lackluster economy created adifficult fundraising environment, and the specter of largegovernment-funding cuts cast great uncertainty over thefuture finances of the public broadcasting system. WETA,however, surpassed financial expectations. The stationreceived generous bequest contributions and continuedcareful cost vigilance.9%19%1%
