3Principal Points:Spirit of Involvementby Diane WolfeThis quarter I decided to write about what I enjoymost…bragging about our girls and their many and variedaccomplishments. It seems every day I am informed aboutsomething one of our girls has done to distinguish herself andour school in our community, in our state and even in ourcountry. Our seniors contributed 4,670 hours of communityservice so far this school year. For the year 2011, our students, faculty, staff and parent volunteers contributed 46,552 totalhours of community service. Service locations in our communityincluded UAMS, Baptist Health, St. Vincent Health, CampAldersgate, Clinton Presidential Center, Helping Hand andlocal parish schools and churches. We even had two studentsvolunteer out of the country, in China and Mexico.Earlier in this publication you read about Helen Hathaway‘13 and her journey/experience as a page for Senator MarkPryor in Washington, D.C. We are so proud of the job she didand the academic awards she earned while in residence. Our students also participated in Model U.N. this past Fall andwon awards for “Best Position Papers,” senior, Bailey Bibb, wonoutstanding delegate, and our sponsor, Mary Logan, wasrecognized for 25 years participation. Freshman, KathrynLatham, distinguished herself and MSM at Student Congressthis year by winning awards in Parliamentary Procedure, whileKatelyn King ‘12 gave an award winning address as author ofa bill. Rounding out our civic accomplishments and awarenesswas an “Aware Fair” which was held March 7. EveryInternational Relations student researched such topics asHunger, Human Rights, Rights of Women, the Environment andPoverty in an effort to publish brochures/pamphlets as awarenesstools displayed during the Fair. The Class of 2010 set up “GoodSearch” before their departure.“Good Search” is a non-profitsearch engine that will raise moneyfor non-profits by using the “GoodSearch” search engine tool. Thisyear, “Good Search” contacted usto let us know that the number of“hits” by MSM searchers resulted ina collection of over $500. The Classof 2010 bought a cow through theHeifer International organization.A special congrats and recognition go out to our MSMPhysical Fitness girls in their recent competition in New Orleanswith the Marine Corps Junior ROTC program. Heather Bollick‘12, Cara Holland ‘12, Bridget Lee ‘12, Katherine Penney ‘14and Molly Sampson ‘14 competed at Jesuit High Schoolagainst many regional boys and girls teams. MSM girls placed2 nd overall and only behind the 1 st Place team, Catholic HighBoys. Sophomore Molly Sampson also won an individualmedal for 1 st Place in the flex-arm hang. Not only are theseladies a part of the first JROTC program, but they have nowset the standard for competitors around the region.Several of our girls have distinguished themselves individually.Katelyn King ‘12 has been selected as a National Merit Finalist.Samantha Varela ‘14 and Maddie Oxner ‘15 placed first andsecond in the poster contest sponsored by the AmericanAssociation of Teachers of French. Corrine de Orbegozo ‘13was selected as one of only twenty 1 st sopranos in the state tomake the all-state choir. Over 110 girls from around the statecompeted. We are very proud that she was a part of a statewideperformance held on February 18. Our women’s choruswas asked again to perform with the Arkansas Symphonyduring the “Nutcracker” performance this year and freshman,Kathryn Latham, was a featured performer in the ballet. Row, Row, Row Your BoatTwelve MSM students have learned what it means to erg (stationaryrowing), sweep (using one oar) and scull (using two oars) since joining the youthprogram through the Arkansas Boathouse Club (ABC). The program, aimed toprovide opportunities in the sport of rowing, teaches ideals of teamwork, physicalfitness, river knowledge and sportsmanship. Last Fall, Quincey Johnson ’12 was ona team that competed in the Head of the Hooch 5K, the second largest regatta inthe U.S. held on the Chattahoochee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Quinceyshares, “As a new team, we were proud just to NOT finish last.” Quincey’s favoritepart of the program was working as one unit for a common goal. She is interestedin talking to schools about rowing in college.

5Mercy Ties are InternationalThe month of February went bytoo fast for six students in particular, theMercy Ambassador students fromArgentina. The Argentinian studentsspent the last several weeks of theirsummer vacation in the United States, staying with MSM families, shadowingtheir host families’ schedules, going toclass, attending field trips and learningabout North American culture.Their Mercy school, Santa Ethnea, back in Buneos Aires, Argentina, is aco-ed school with grades first throughhigh school. Besides the obvious differences, the students expressed surpriseat the higher percentage of Catholicstudents attending Mount St. Mary andthe amount of Masses and spiritualopportunities involving the families ofstudents. They enjoyed being includedin the Big Sis/Lil Sis lunch and applaudedthe school’s efforts to provide opportunitiesfor students to get to know oneanother. They stated that there is noneed to get to know most of their classmatesin Argentina, because the sameclass of around 70 students attendsschool together from first grade throughtwelfth. The class stays together eachday and from year-to-year as well, andit is the teachers who rotate classroomsinstead of the students.Mercy Ambassadors from Argentina: Sol Capovilla, Augustina De Los Reyes, MagdalenaDurand, Clara Papini, Paula Rojas, and Florentina VirasoroOn the flip side of this exchange, sixMercy Ambassadors from MSM willtravel, or have traveled already, toArgentina to stay with the families ofthe sister students there. 7TinkerBelles Help Desk Helps MSMDYKNOW, Motherboards, WirelessAccess Points – many new wordsbecame part of everyday language atMount St. Mary when 250 new studentlaptops were added for freshman andsophomore students at the beginningof the 2011-2012 school year. The shift toa laptop environment has come with itsfair share of challenges for the schoolcommunity, but the formation of onenew student group, the “TinkerBelles”,has helped the IT Department keepthings running smoothly. The TinkerBelles were enlisted as thefirst line of defense, running the MSMHelpDesk and routing tickets to the ITDepartment, comprised of two full-timestaff members. It’s not unusual to seethem hurrying through the hallways tohandle some of the legwork, assessingthe situation in the classrooms and doingtheir best to fix or report the problemfor the IT Department. Mount St. Maryoperates in a Windows 7 environmentwith a heavy wireless network thatsupports 330 users - students, facultyTinkerBelle Ellie Lambert ‘13and staff. Ellie Lambert, a junior thisyear, says that she has learned a lotabout troubleshooting and identifyingsystem-wide problems from herexperience as a TinkerBelle. “Becauseeveryone is on the computer at thesame time, you may have 40 studentsin one class period on the samewebsite and it causes problems for ateacher in another room becausethey’re all connected.”Many of the TinkerBelles helped installsoftware needed in the classroom andtroubleshoot issues with printers andinternet access. One of the softwarepackages installed, Dyknow, allowsteachers to monitor students’ laptopuse, ranging from total control wherethey control and see every computerscreen to blocking or allowing programslike Internet Explorer duringtesting periods. The screens can onlybe monitored from the MSM wirelessnetwork on campus; however, withtoday’s online discussion boards andhomework assignments now posted toschoolfusion websites, students may stillbe expected to “participate in class”when stuck at home on a snow day!The TinkerBelles have learned that“Documentation is King” accordingto Network Administrator MatthewStevens, who has taught them theimportance of knowing what they’vealready done before proceeding tothe next step.
