Although Dr.Kintanar may have lost the close race, he made the <strong>Indiana</strong><strong>Academy</strong> proud with a standout speech and a run-<strong>of</strong>f vote. Dr.Kintanar said it was “an honor” to represent <strong>Indiana</strong> at thenational level and to be supported by the IAFP in his bid forpresident-elect. He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the IAFPleadership, his campaign committee and the IAFP staff for theirsupport and hard work.Dr. Kintanar’s service on the AAFP Board led him across thenation, speaking for family medicine and about the vital role thatit plays in our healthcare system. In his campaign speech to theCongress <strong>of</strong> Delegates, Dr. Kintanar spoke <strong>of</strong> the strategicalliances that have been made in recent years between AAFP andother partners and the steps necessary to ensure that familymedicine is recognized for its cost-effective continuity <strong>of</strong> care. “Ienvision embarking on a new course that will enable familymedicine to be the essential piece at the table <strong>of</strong> health carereform,” Kintanar asserted. The IAFP would like to extend ourdeepest gratitude for Dr. Kintanar’s service on behalf <strong>of</strong> our<strong>Academy</strong>. We are eager to continue the dialogue with him at homeand anticipate great opportunities for family medicine in <strong>Indiana</strong>.Tom Kintanar, MD, speaks with family physicians from across thecountry about the issues facing family medicine.Fred Ridge, MD, Retires from AAFP DelegationThis session <strong>of</strong> the Congress <strong>of</strong> Delegates also marked the end <strong>of</strong> a 12-year tenure with <strong>Indiana</strong>’s AAFP delegation for Fred Ridge, MD. Dr.Ridge continuously served the <strong>Indiana</strong> delegation with experience andinsight beginning in 1994 and completed two terms as alternatedelegate and four terms as delegate.Howard Deitsch, MD,Honored as <strong>Family</strong>Physician <strong>of</strong> theYear FinalistDr. Howard Deitsch (Richmond),2005 IAFP <strong>Family</strong> Physician <strong>of</strong>the Year, was honored as a finalistfor the 2007 AAFP <strong>Family</strong>Physician <strong>of</strong> the Year, marking one<strong>of</strong> the only times that a familydoctor from <strong>Indiana</strong> has everreached the top five. Dr. Deitschhas been a practicing familyphysician in Richmond since1973. He currently serves as themedical director <strong>of</strong> student health at Earlham College and at the ReidHospice Program. He serves on the Wayne County Board <strong>of</strong> Healthand Reid Hospital Board <strong>of</strong> Directors. Dr. Deitsch is among adistinguished group <strong>of</strong> family physicians in receiving this honor, withthe national award going to Dr. Steven Levin <strong>of</strong> St. John’s HealthCenter in New Brunswick, New Jersey.11
