MyPyramid Food Guidance Systemby Maria V. Fletcher, MDThe Food Guide Pyramid developed by theUSDA became so widely recognized as anexcellent tool to help people make healthyfood choices, many believed it has been thebasis of nutritional guidance for 40 years ormore. In reality, it was only 13 years oldwhen it was updated and MyPyramid wasreleased in April 2005. MyPyramid kept allthe food groups from the original FoodPyramid, but it included a graphicrepresentation of physical activity, which isan important additional recommendation forhealthy living.The USDA revised the food guidance systemto reflect evidence gained from the mostrecent research. This revision wascoordinated with the development of the2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans,which was released by the USDA and HHS inJanuary 2005.Another reason to revise the food pyramidwas to help consumers be more effective intheir efforts to establish a healthy way of life.MyPyramid has motivational and educationaltools. This food plan can includespecific daily amounts from each food groupand a limit for fats, added sugars and alcohol.This personalized mini-poster can be printedout, and it includes a worksheet to help trackprogress and set goals for the future.The MyPyramid food guidance systemprovides specific recommendations formaking healthier food choices. When therecommendations for dietary guidance areimplemented, specific changes in the typicalAmerican diet should occur. There would bean increased intake of vitamins, minerals,dietary fiber, and other nutrients. A decreaseintake of saturated fats, trans-fats andcholesterol would be seen with an increasedintake of fruits, vegetables and whole grainsto decrease risk for some chronic diseases. Itis felt that the balance of caloric intake withenergy requirement would result in ahealthier weight and prevent obesity.The most obese people in the world live inAmerica, where more than 33% ofAmerican adults are obese. Obesity-relateddeaths have climbed higher than 300,000 ayear. According to the CDC, obesity inadults has increased by 60% within the past20 years, and in the past 30 years, obesity inchildren has tripled.
