Feldman, MD,Elected President <strong>of</strong> <strong>Indiana</strong> Medical History MuseumThe <strong>Indiana</strong> Medical History Museum elected board members and a slate <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficersat their Annual Business Meeting on November 5, 2006. Richard D. Feldman, MD,director <strong>of</strong> medical education at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, was electedpresident. Dr. Feldman is a past president <strong>of</strong> the IAFP. In addition, Missy Lewis,IAFP foundation director, serves as a member <strong>of</strong> the board.The <strong>Indiana</strong> Medical History Museum is housed in the Old Pathology Building onthe grounds <strong>of</strong> the former Central State Hospital. Opening in 1896, the PathologyBuilding was dedicated to discovering the causes <strong>of</strong> mental illness to aid sciencein finding cures for the residents. In addition to the historical pathology labs,there is also a replica <strong>of</strong> a mid-twentieth century Hoosier doctor’s <strong>of</strong>fice that hasbeen financially supported by the IAFP Foundation.Frederick R. Ridge, MD,Receives Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement AwardDr. Frederick R. Ridge, health <strong>of</strong>ficer from Greene County, was honored Thursday,October 19, 2006, at the 22nd annual “Tony and Mary Hulman Health AchievementAwards” dinner at the downtown Westin Hotel in <strong>Indiana</strong>polis. James Rogers,president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Indiana</strong> Public Health Foundation, Inc., notes that the awards aregiven to recognize outstanding contributions in the fields <strong>of</strong> geriatrics andgerontology, preventive medicine and public health, and environmental health,along with a Lifetime Award for Distinguished Service in Years <strong>of</strong> HealthAdvancement. These awards are given to individuals, as well as to business andindustry recipients. Judy O’Bannon was the dinner chairman for this prestigiousawards program.Dr. Ridge received the award in the area <strong>of</strong> preventive medicine and public health.Dr. Virginia Caine, Marion County Health Department director, presented the awardto Dr. Ridge. Comments from the letter nominating Dr. Ridge included: Dr. Ridgehas exemplified exceptional and dedicated leadership in recognizing the need toimprove the image <strong>of</strong> public health, and the importance for all local healthdepartments to have a voice in advancing public health and improvingcommunications among local health departments. He has been instrumental inbringing local health <strong>of</strong>ficers and staff together to develop the <strong>Indiana</strong> Association<strong>of</strong> Public Health <strong>Physicians</strong> and Local Health Departments Organization, Inc. Dr.Ridge has served as chairman <strong>of</strong> three continuing education seminars for localhealth <strong>of</strong>ficers for six years, and worked to include local health department staff asparticipants in the seminars, providing them with the opportunity to shareinformation and solutions on improving the image <strong>of</strong> local health departments.26
