5 Results and comments Results and comments 5.1 Simultaneous bilateral surgery (I) One year after the surgery, the mean improvement in PTA-AC was 18 dB (range 1-41 dB), with a mean PTA-AC of 25 dB (range 13-46 dB). The AB-GAP was within 10 dB in 81% (29/36) and PTA-AC within 30 dB in 75% (27/36) of the ears. Table 1 summarizes the hearing results of both sides, with no statistically significant postoperative differences between the ears. A preoperative difference between ears was present, and the worse ear was operated on first, as in the unilateral standard protocol. After surgery, none of the patients had significantly (15%) lowered speech discrimination scores or had suffered significant (over 10 dB) sensorineural hearing impairment. Subjectively, 72% (13/18) of the patients assessed their own hearing as good or excellent one year after surgery. The remaining 28% reported moderate hearing ability after one year.
