<strong>NW</strong>S STUDENT HANDBOOKWHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU To become part of the household schedule. You should watch, ask and learnwhat your family does, and at what times. To learn family rules and follow them, including curfew (time to be home). To learn American personal hygiene customs. It iscustomary to shower or bathe everyday and change intoclean clothes. Both men and women use deodorant andwomen generally shave underarms and legs. Body odor isoffensive to Americans, but they may not feelcomfortable discussing it. To take care of your personal space in the house andkeep it neat and clean. Respect the privacy of your family. Spend times with them, but still allowtime for both of you to have privacy. Find out what your household chores are each week. If you need help, askyour family members how to do them (for example, how to work thedishwasher). Do extra chores at times. This is a nice way to show your appreciation. Share yourself. Show an interest in your family and their activities andshare your own favorite activities with them. Look for the positive. Talk to your family about adjustments you have to make concerning familylife, food, sleep, school and exercise. Stay healthy! Eat and sleep well and get lots of exercise.
