For the Son of Mandid not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom formany.” –Mark 10:44-45Dear Friends, Families, and Supporters of Bishop McNamara High School,Wow what a year we had in 2011-2012! After finishing my second year as President/CEOand fifteenth year overall at my beloved alma mater, I am so proud of what has beenaccomplished, and the lives that are being changed, every day at Bishop McNamaraHigh School. From the historic accomplishments of the graduating class of 2012 who achieveda 100% college acceptance rate and received more than $18 million in scholarship and aid tocollege, to the noteworthy recognition received by our talented and passionate faculty and staff,to our highest ever enrollment, and record gains in our fundraising efforts along with a 50%increase in alumni participation in our annual fund, lives are truly being changed and greatthings are happening at 6800 Marlboro Pike.In responding to His apostles’ questions about who was the most favored among His disciples, Mark accounts for us how Jesus helps all ofus to see with a greater vision, mission and purpose how greatness is achieved. In the biblical verse referenced above, Jesus goes beyond ourworldly vision of “greatness” and challenges us to think and to act with Him for all eternity through our commitment to serve. The motto atBishop McNamara, “To Think with Christ,” a phrase coined by the late-Bishop John M. McNamara who was known as a strong advocate forthe role of Catholic education in forming the hearts and minds of youth and thereby changing the world, is a daily reminder for those of uswho walk the halls at Bishop McNamara on how to live our lives by serving and loving others. But it doesn’t stop there. Through your serviceto our school, whether as a volunteer, through your prayers, or by your financial contribution, you are serving a worthy mission and purposeand answering Jesus’ challenge. Through your efforts and support you are helping us to “bring our young people to completeness” andchallenging our students, both directly and indirectly, “To Think with Christ.” It is with sincerity of heart that I thank you for all you do andfor the example you are setting for our students.With tremendous progress being made on fulfilling the goals set forth in our Strategic Plan, the future of our school has never looked better.From strengthening our unique culture and charism as a Catholic school in the Holy Cross tradition, to raising the bar of our academicprogram and introducing new and relevant programs to our curriculum, to laying the foundation for an expanded campus that will provideus with the finest academic, art and athletic facilities in the Washington Metropolitan area, to sustaining our future through the formationof our first ever endowment, The Cross and Anchor Fund, our battle cry of going from “good to great” is a living testimony of the love, loyalty,commitment and belief each of you have in this authentically Holy Cross school.So enjoy this year in review, celebrate the accomplishments of the past, and believe that an even better future awaits. Board Chair’s Message“While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven.”Blessed Father Basil Anthony Moreau, C.S.C., Founder, Congregation of Holy CrossDear Members of the Bishop McNamara High School Community,This quote by Fr. Basil Moreau is one that truly resonates with me and one that I can say that as the Chair of the Board of Directors atBishop McNamara I have been so blessed to witness firsthand the excellent work that this school is doing. From cultivating a senseof family, love and welcome that our new students receive on their first days of school to the public witness of gratitude and affectionexpressed on graduation day at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, it is quite evident to my fellow Board members and I thatlives are being touched and transformed through the daily work of the teachers, support staff, coaches, counselors and administrators at BishopMcNamara High School.Work of this sort doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It must be guided by the Holy Spirit, driven by a worthwhile mission, and supported andencouraged by each of us. As a 1994 graduate it is both an honor and a privilege to serve and support my alma mater. I am also most gratefulto my colleagues on the Board for the time they commit, the talent they bring to help advance the mission of the school, and their generousfinancial support. I also want to thank each one of you who, in spite of this difficult economy, have remembered Bishop McNamara throughyour prayers, volunteer efforts, and financial donations. Your expression of belief in this school has made it a record year for us as we’ve noted a30% increase in our annual fundraising efforts and saw a 50% increase in alumni participation. This speaks volumes about your love, loyalty andbelief in Bishop McNamara High School!One of the great lessons I learned as a student at Bishop McNamara is to see the face of Christ in others, serve the needs of others, and live for amission larger than myself. However, on the first day of school, when boys walked into her classroom,she didn’t know her future included teaching boys! But, with herhusband’s encouragement, and the support of other La Reine teach-Remembering a Friend: Mrs. Eugenia “Toni” Milnerers who joined the BMHS faculty, she was able to give it a chance. Shesaw how important her presence there was for the La Reine girls whohad made the transition to the new coed school. Along with the otherformer La Reine faculty, she felt thankful that they were able to help thestudents break the ice and relax in their new environment. Mrs. Khalilihas now taught Chemistry for over 20 years at both BMHS and LRHS,and Mrs. Milner was the long time guidance counselor at both schools.6On her first day as a La Reine faculty member, SaiedehKhalili sat down at a table to begin her new facultyand staff orientation after accepting the position ofChemistry teacher offered by Science chair, Sister Dolores Ann.Eager to continue teaching at a Catholic school and excited toinstruct young women, Mrs. Khalili had no way of knowing thather lifelong best friend had just taken the seat next to her in theperson of Eugenia “Toni” Milner. After a friendly tease by Mrs.Khalili regarding why a woman would have a man’s name, thefriendship was sealed and they were side by side for more than16 years as Toni would serve as Mrs. Khalili’s buddy, mentorand sister. On January 20, 2006, Mrs. Milner lost her battle withcancer, but her spirit and memory live on, especially in SaiedehKhalili. Below are her memories of Mrs. Milner, what called herto work in education and what she is most thankful for throughouther career.Mrs. Khalili has always known she wanted to bea teacher. As a little girl, she would line upher dolls before her and deliver lessonsto the row of attentive students. Shealso learned very early the value ofa good education, especially forwomen.Why did you choose to work inCatholic Schools, particularly LaReine?“Education was parity. I rememberhow girls in my culture didn’tgo into higher education. My ownmother, like so many other women,only attended school up to the ninthgrade at which time she stopped to followour culture of women stopping theireducation to be a part of arranged marriages.I was raised in a strict religious family environment,where education and homework came first,I knew I must work in a school setting that nourishedyoung people and had similar foundations in religion.”Along with the opportunity to help young women, La Reine HighSchool was a very good fit for Mrs. Khalili.About your time at La Reine, what are you most thankful for, andwhat do you think Toni was most thankful for?“God put me in that position to work in such a place and Toni felt thesame way. I was so thankful to have Toni as a mentor, teacher, awesomefriend and “buddy” to support me and give me advice.”Unfortunately, La Reine High School shut its doors in 1992. Despite theclosing, Toni and Saiedeh’s friendship would not be parted, as BrotherJohn Paige and Principal Matthew Goyette asked both women to continuetheir respective roles at the newly coed Bishop McNamara HighSchool.“I remember telling Matt Goyette, I am always optimistic!”BISHOP MCNAMARA HIGH SCHOOL 2011-2012 Annual ReportOf your time at Bishop McNamara, what makes you most thankful?“I love the beauty of the people and the community. For example Mrs.Gossart was so awesome and Mr. Clark has been so caring to me.”Even after the events of 9/11, Saiedeh, a Muslim from Iran, remembersfeeling so supported when members of the BMHS community, suchas Mr. Clark, reached out to her to offer words of condolence after theattacks.There were differences between the two friends. Mrs. Milner was AfricanAmerica, grew up in urban American and Mrs. Khaliliwas born to a strict religious family in the Arab world,having received her education in a British system.Their friendship weathered many storms of lifesuch as 9/11, Toni’s long health battle, andthe demands of everyday life.What do you think Mrs. Milner wasmost thankful for at Bishop McNamara?“She cherished everyday by coming towork and bragging about her ‘Babies’– her 9th grade students. She was sograteful for the opportunity to teach,mentor and guide them to the fullest.Indeed, she loved it! She knew in herheart that, someday, they would be backand thank her for all the hard work she putin on their behalf. However, they came backalright. They’re somebody important now but,unfortunately, she is not here to cherish it with themand see the planted seeds by her.“Toni was proud and happy with what she was doing until the very end.”Tell us about Mrs. Milner’s character.“I loved her sense of humor. She was a character but a caring person wholoved life. Toni loved her work with her students. Toni loved my cookingand bagels, lots of bagels.”After Mrs. Milner’s passing in 2006, a scholarship was created in herhonor. This scholarship is endowed by her family and friends and is offeredannually to a young man or woman who demonstrate those qualitiesof academic effort, co-curricular involvement and service to othersthat Mrs. Milner so valued and witnessed to her students, with prioritygiven to students with financial need. “This scholarship honors her,” Mrs.Khalili explains. “Everything I do, I do to honor God and I think of whatToni would want me to do.”Although the pain of the loss of her friend is still so palpable, Mrs.Khalili states, “I wouldn’t change any moment or any second even afterToni died. I believe that our friendship was granted to me. I treasure iteven to this day and Toni will always have a special place in my heart.”

GratitudeAn Expression ofby Erik Arnold ‘13The following is an excerpted talk given by senior, Erik Arnold, at the Donor Recognition Brunch on September 9, 2012.Good morning and welcome back to BishopMcNamara High School. My name is Erik Arnoldand this morning I’d like to just share a little bit ofmy McNamara experience with you. I joined the BishopMcNamara community when I was in the 7th/8th gradeand I would say that I have been a Mustang ever since. Istill remember the first time Mr. Clark gave my mom andI a tour around the school and as we were walking downthe hallways he knew every student by name and everystudent was excited to see him. For some reason I felt likeit was weird that the students were sohappy to see their principal but shortlyafter I realized I had no idea who Mr.Clark really was at the time or whattype of role he had in my future.As an incoming freshman, I was soexcited to officially say I went to McNamara. Iwanted to be one of those students that did itall. My first year I was in the wind ensemble,percussion ensemble, and on the basketball teamwhile taking all honors classes. Overall, I had ablast my freshman year. I established so manygreat friendships with, not only my classmates,but with different teachers, coaches, andadministrators. I can’t even begin to imagine what it was like at any otherschool. I’m sure anywhere else, I couldn’t have that same friendship withmy teachers like I do at McNamara. Although most students would lookat most of these adults as just their teachers, they are so much more thanthat to me.So leaving my freshman year I wanted to do even more thanI did the year before. I literally wanted to do it all. So, I helped CoachKeithline work the basketball camp over the summer. As much as I thinkthose 6-9 year olds gave me the hardest time in the world, that is one ofmy favorite things to do over the summer. Whenever I think I’m havinga hard time working the camp I can only begin to imagine what some ofmy teachers and coaches go through. But seeing those kids smiling andhaving fun is what kept me coming back every day.Going into my sophomore year, time was limited and so was money.With my younger brother coming in as a freshman, it was a strugglefor my mom to keep us both in school by herself. In order for us to beable to stay at McNamara, she had to start working two jobs and eventhat wasn’t enough. Luckily, with the different talents my brothers and Ihave we were able to receive different music scholarships and leadershipscholarships to help us get by. And without the tremendous time, effort,and help my family has received from Mr. Clark and the rest of thefaculty/staff & administration I can almost guarantee I wouldn’t be heretoday. I’d be lost without my McNamara family!Although money was a problem for my family, I wasn’t goingto let that hold me back. I wasn’t going todisappoint all those that helped keep me in myschool. So junior year I decided I was going togive all my time to my school, not that I didn’talready. My junior year, I played on the varsitybasketball team, played in the wind ensemble,percussion ensemble, and added African Danceinto my schedule. Along with all of that I hadthe honor of being inducted into the NationalHonor Society. I felt like I was surely on theright path and, at that point, I felt like I neededto start helping others get on the same path. Idecided to apply to be a Youth Leader and luckilyI had the privilege to become one. Along withworking the basketball camp over the summer,the youth leader conference this past summerwas one of my favorite experiences while beingat McNamara. It was just so much fun being away for a week getting toknow people in my school so much more then I had already known.Entering my final year as a student at McNamara I decided toadd more to my list. I went out for the football team. Now along withbeing in the National Honor Society, a Youth Leader, participating inwind ensemble, percussion ensemble, African dance, and basketball.I was also a quarterback for the football team. As Mr. Kelly said in hispre-game talk to the team before the Georgetown Prep game, “home iswhere the heart is.” My heart is in my school so I can honestly say thatMcNamara has been my home for the past four years. And I feel that if Ican rub off on those that are younger than me now starting with my twolittle brothers, then our home here at Bishop McNamara can only growto be bigger and better then it was before.
