PREFACE623 DUST CONTROL SURFACE TREATMENTRetitle this section and replace the entire content to allow the contractor the option to use eithercalcium chloride or magnesium chloride as a dust control surface treatment. Retire the existingbid item, 62301 Calcium Chloride Surface Treatment, and replace with the new bid item, 62302Dust Control Surface Treatment. The new item is measured by the square yard instead of by the ton. The unit of measure waschanged so the department can add more dust control products in the future. Some of thesepotential products may be impractical to weigh before mixing with water. The new specification, however, allows the engineer to calculate the square yards for paymentusing measured volume or weight and applying a conversion factor. The conversion factor mustbe pre-approved by the contractor as specified in 109.1.2(2).See also Bid Items Added and Bid Items Retired.641.2.9 Overhead Sign SupportsRevise paragraph one, previously published in the supplement, to eliminate the engineer'sreview of shop drawings. Revise paragraph three to provide for department designed bases ifthe plans include SDD 15C15-1 "Monotube Overhead Sign Support Base" or SDD 15C16-1"Monotube Cantilever Sign Support Base". The criteria for determining if the SDD's should beincluded in the contract are published on the back sides of the SDD's. Those criteria addressthe following:1. Total area of signs mounted on structure.2. The maximum horizontal span or length of cantilevered arm.3. The maximum sign depth.4. The maximum height of the horizontal arm.If the plans do not show base design details, the contractor must submit a base design with thesign support shop drawings. That design must include the base and roadway elevationsnecessary to check the sign clearance. Also, for contractor-designed bases, add the designrequirements specified in the department's SDD's for the top-of-pad above grade dimension, thecompressive strength of concrete, the reinforcing steel strength, and the AASHTO anchor boltdesignation.See also new SDD's 15C15-1 and 15C16-1.641.5 Basis of PaymentRevise subsection 641.5.2, previously published in the supplement, to clarify that the signsupport base design is included if the plans do not provide design details for the sign supportbase.See also new SDD's 15C15-1 and 15C16-1.643.2.1 GeneralRevise this subsection, previously published in the supplement, to specify in more detail thequality of traffic control devices, based on language in the “Quality Standards for Work ZoneTraffic Control Devices” booklet, printed by the American Traffic Safety Services Association.643.2.2.1 GeneralRevise paragraph one, previously published in the supplement, to update the MUTCD arrowboard reference to section 6F.53, figure 6F-3 of the MUTCD 2000 Edition.l
