Math 102syllabusSpring 2012Professor:Matthew Neal (nealm@denison.edu)Office and phone: Olin 202 (6288)Office Hours: MTWRF 1:30-3:30 or by appointmentWeb site:http://personal.denison.edu/~nealm/CourseBookThis course is an introduction to collection and statistical analysis of data. The goal is to use mathematicson data samples to make reasonable precise probabilistic statements about real world variablesStatistics and Data Analysis by Peck, Olsen, and DevoreGrades and ExpectationsTopicsThe grade will be entirely calculated based on homework.• 20 % for weekly homework checks• 15 % each for four tests• 20 % for a final examEvery Friday there will be a one problem homework check to begin class. This will be a randomlyselected homework problem that you should have completed before hand. Thus the homework checksare testing (1) that you have done the required work and (2) your speed in an examination setting. Thetests will mostly consist of slightly altered homework problems with one extra challenging problem thatrequires deeper understanding of the homework to complete. I will also collect the hw and grade it forcompleteness. The tests dates are February 8th, March 2nd, April 2nd, and April 25th. The exam is at 9 a.m. on May8th in our classroom. We will try to cover as much of chapters 2 through 16 in the book as we can. I will periodically addsome fun math topics from sports. Topics include experimental design, summary statistics, basic probability, distributions of sample statistics, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, single and multivariableregression, ANOVA, and goodness of fit tests.Office HoursEvery day from 1:30 to 3:30 I will be in my office for help with Math or other issues. Please come tooffice hours so I can get to know you better!Late WorkLate assignments will receive a 20 % point penalty per day late unless there is a PRIOR written note(such as a note from Whistler) that verifies a VERY strong excuse (such as illness or important sportsteam events). Late quizzes are not accepted at all without a written excuse as above.

Academic IntegrityThe students and faculty of Denison University and the Department of Mathematics and ComputerScience are committed to academic integrity and will not tolerate any violation of this principle. Academichonesty, the cornerstone of teaching and learning, lays the foundation for lifelong integrity.Academic dishonesty is, in most cases, intellectual theft. It includes, but is not limited to, providing orreceiving assistance in a manner not authorized by the instructor in the creation of work to be submittedfor evaluation. This standard applies to all work ranging from daily homework assignments to majorexams. Students must clearly cite any sources consulted, not only for quoted phrases but also for ideasand information that are not common knowledge. Neither ignorance nor carelessness is an acceptabledefense in cases of plagiarism. It is the students responsibility to follow the appropriate format forcitations.Proposed and developed by Denison students, passed unanimously by DCGA and Denisons faculty, theCode of Academic Integrity requires that instructors notify the Associate Provost of cases of academicdishonesty, and it requires that cases be heard by the Academic Integrity Board. Further, the code makesstudents responsible for promoting a culture of integrity on campus and acting in instances in whichintegrity is violated. For further information about the Code of Academic Integrity see http://www.denison.edu/about/integrity.htmlDisabilitiesAny student who feels he or she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability shouldcontact me privately as soon as possible to discuss his or her specific needs. I rely on the AcademicSupport and Enrichment Center in 102 Doane to verify the need for reasonable accommodations basedon documentation on file in that office.
