PrefaceOn behalf of the Florida Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders InteragencyAction Group, we are pleased to present this <strong>resource</strong> <strong>guide</strong>. The <strong>guide</strong>summarizes key information from the body of knowledge about this topic.The <strong>guide</strong> was prepared with a desire that it will be useful to individuals andfamilies who are living with the results of fetal alcohol effects. Our purposealso was to provide a <strong>resource</strong> for professionals who seek to prevent fetalalcohol exposure and to offer interventions to assist affected individuals andfamilies.Florida’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Interagency Action Grouprequested development of this <strong>guide</strong> and provided recommendations relatedto its content. The Florida Department of Health, Maternal and ChildHealth Program, led coordination of the FASD action group since it firstconvened in 2000. Its purpose is to develop and facilitate implementationof a plan and strategies to improve prevention, intervention, and supportrelated to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects. The actiongroup includes committed state agencies, statewide organizations, the FloridaGovernor’s Office, local service providers, advocates, and families who havefetal alcohol affected members. Key staff from the Departments of Healthand of Children and Families who represented the action group to organizethe project and serve as a review and editorial group, and the graphic artists,are identified in the Acknowledgements on page 2 of this <strong>guide</strong>.We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of the many researchers andpractitioners whose works are quoted throughout this <strong>guide</strong>.
