Department of Children and Families▪ Center for Substance Abuse Prevention – Prevention Works!Training is available for nurses and others through the Internet athttp://www.fadaa.org/events/training/prevention.html▪ Ongoing substance abuse prevention activities target school agechildren through school health and other prevention programs.▪ There are universal, selective, and indicated substance abuseprevention activities throughout Florida.SECTION 6PreventionThe Healthy Families Florida Program is administered by the Ounceof Prevention. It is a voluntary home visiting program that helpsparents during the most important learning years of a child’s life, frombirth to five years. A home visitor works with families to learn whatto expect as the baby grows and develops, how to stimulate the child’shealthy growth and development, and how to cope and problem solveduring stressful times. The home visitor can also help the familyconnect to other community services the family may need. For moreinformation, go to: www.healthyfamiliesfla.org/The Substance Abuse Program makes every effort possible to identifyand encourage treatment entry for pregnant and postpartum substanceabusing women in the State of Florida through its intervention/outreach efforts. Pregnant women are given first priority status foradmission and placement.Programs for pregnant women and women with dependent childrenare offered: primary medical services for both the mother anddependent children; prenatal care and peri-natal care for effects ofmaternal substance abuse; pediatric health care for dependentchildren; postpartum care for mother and child; counseling for boththe adult and the child on a range of needs; transportation, childcare,outreach services; and screening/testing/counseling for HIV & TB.Services may be provided directly by providers or by formalagreements with other service providers.Through the Family Safety Program children who are placed in fostercare receive a Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessment. Thisprocess should assist in improving identification and interventions forfoster care children with FASD.The Children’s Mental Health Program receives referrals through asingle point of access and provides a range of children’s mental healthevaluation and treatment services.
