SECTION 6PreventionFlorida spendsan estimated$78,918,000annually to providespecial educationand juvenile justiceservices to children5-18 years effectedby FAS or ARBDND.This amounts to anestimated $914,183spent per day forthese services.www.onlineclinic.com/calculator.phpFlorida’s Fetal Alcohol Syndrome InitiativesDepartment of Health, continued▪ Substance abuse treatment programs and public health carefacilities are required to give priority for services to pregnant,abusing women.▪ Pregnant women using alcohol or other drugs are identified onFlorida’s Healthy Start Risk Screening Instrument, which isexpected to be offered to all pregnant women.▪ All pregnant women who are abusing alcohol or other drugs areeligible for Healthy Start care coordination services including homevisiting, education, and support for abstinency efforts.▪ All infants whose mother abused alcohol or other drugs duringpregnancy and their families are eligible for Healthy Start carecoordination services including home visiting, education on uniqueparenting needs of the child, support for abstinency efforts, andfamily planning education and support. Pregnantstudents are referred to pre-natal care, Healthy Start, and schooldistrict Teenage Pregnancy Programs. Students that give birth areprovided with case management and support services that enablethe majority of them to return to school and graduate.
