Educating and Cultivating Servants for ChristCVCA at the FBLA National Leadership ConferenceFour CVCA students and their adviser attend Conference in San AntonioFrom June 28 to July 2, 2012, ateam of four CVCA students competedat the FBLA NationalLeadership Conference in SanAntonio, Texas. The students competedin four of the 65 competitiveevents offered. They also did testingin open events in Social Media andLeadership.The students needed to win first,second, or third place at their stateconference in order to competenationally. They were competingagainst the best from around theUnited States, Europe, and theCaribbean.The events were Public Speaking II,Hospitality Management, FBLAPrinciples and Procedures, andIntro. to Business Communication.The students ranged from freshmanto juniors.We also enjoyedthe sights of SanAntonio, visitedthe Alamo, SeaWorld of SanAntonio, and theRiverwalk.When not competing,studentsattended workshopsranging intopics fromAccounting, SATand ACT strategies, how to network,how to start their own business,and many other leadershipand entrepreneurship topics.David Parker won fifth place inPublic Speaking II. This is thefirst time in ten years CVCA hashad a National Winner. David is afour-year FBLA member and a second-yearSchool of Business andEntrepreneurship student. Heshared, “It’s always said that ‘Youwin some you lose some.’ Well,with lots of practice, persistence,and the help of God, I was able towin big and bring this honor hometo my state, city, community, highschool, teacher, Mrs. Beavers, andmy family.”FBLA Adviser Receives National RecognitionMrs. Kim Beavers was recognized before 8,500 Future Business Leaders of Americaparticipants at the FBLA National Conference. She received the Outstanding LocalAdviser award for her leadership of CVCA’s FBLA program.Mrs. Beavers has been teaching at CVCA since 1999. She teaches business and technologyclasses to high school students, serves as the middle and high school FBLAAdviser, and is the School of Distinction Chair for our Business andEntrepreneurship Program. She is the State Adviser for Ohio FBLA, leading FBLAchapters across the state for both middle andhigh school and college. She states, “I enjoyworking with the students, advisers, and businessprofessionals in Ohio and at CVCA. Their first bigassignment will be on <strong>August</strong> 14,2012 during the student orientationwhen they will sell school suppliesto new middle and highschool students. Students will be introducingtheir SOBE mentors to theirparents and will have their firstmeeting of the school year. Thiswill be a breakfast meeting at 7:00a.m. in the Library.NEW YORK FIELD TRIPOn Tuesday, September 26, 2012,the students will take a one-dayfield trip to the New York CityFinancial District. They will travelas business personnel to see WallStreet, NASDAQ, the Museum ofAmerican Finance, and The FederalReserve Bank of New York.MIAMI UNIVERSITY VISITOn Monday and Tuesday, October15 and 16, 2012, the students willtravel to Oxford, Ohio (nearCincinnati) to visit MiamiUniversity School of Business. Wewill hear from two business professors,tour the campus, and participatein an Ohio FBLA Fall LeadershipRetreat for SOBE students.This trip is also open to any highschool CVCA students who wouldlike to visit Miami University for acollege visit. They can sign up inthe Guidance Office or talk to Mrs.Beavers or Mr. Cowley.LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEOn November 1–4, the studentswill have the opportunity to travelto Indianapolis, Indiana for theFBLA Fall Leadership conference.We will leave Thursday and returnon Sunday.FBLA FUNDRAISERSFBLA will be selling donuts,smoothies, and cider at the firsthome football game, Homecoming,and at the Senior Night footballgame. The members will also sellEntertainment Books for Akron,Canton, Cleveland, and throughoutthe United States. Finally, themembers will also sell smoothiesand slushies in the school store.FBLA MEMBERSHIPFuture Business Leaders of Americais open for membership from<strong>August</strong> 14 until September 15,2012. We have a junior high programfor $30.00 and a high schoolprogram for freshman and sophomoreswith two levels – social for$75.00 and full for $100. Forjuniors and seniors to join the program,they must either have beenan FBLA member during theirfreshman or sophomore year or beinvolved in the School of Businessand Entrepreneurship Program atthe social or full membership level.JUNIOR HIGH EVENTThe junior high FBLA programwill be hosting an event in <strong>August</strong>.More information will be senthome with the students.PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPAttention parents, aunts, uncles,and grandparents… We need yoursupport.
