SUMMARY OF <strong>2011</strong>Throughout the course <strong>of</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, the Agricultural Commission helped several land/large animal owners with issuesconcerning their land and management <strong>of</strong> large animals. All parties involved were able to come to mutualagreements concerning these issues. The Agricultural Commission is always available to help guide and educatelocal land owners with issues involving their land or animals; we also are here for land owners that are trying tokeep parcels <strong>of</strong> land within their family. We can show them ways to hang onto their land for enjoyment <strong>of</strong> futuregenerations.Respectfully submitted,Karen Pilon, Chairman<strong>Ludlow</strong> Agricultural CommissionMembers:Mike HoganWilliam EllisonDon RobertsJay ChenierAnn WhitworthBetty KibbeMark CasimiroHISTORICAL COMMISSIONThe Historical Commission's powers and duties are primarily to preserve, protect, and develop the historical andarcheological assets <strong>of</strong> the town. The Commission shall conduct researches for places <strong>of</strong> historic and archeologicalvalue, shall cooperate with the state archaeologist, and shall seek to coordinate the activities <strong>of</strong> un<strong>of</strong>ficial bodiesorganized for similar purposes. The Commission works very closely with the Massachusetts Historic Commission.In February, March, and again in September, members met with HAP representatives to discuss the proposedadaption and reuse <strong>of</strong> the Stevens Memorial Building for affordable senior housing. By reusing this historicbuilding, the plan is to create 28 units <strong>of</strong> housing for low-income seniors, with 4 units being handicap accessible.The Stevens Memorial Building has always held an important role in the <strong>Town</strong>. The Stevens Memorial Building,erected in 1906 as a recreation and educational center for the employees <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ludlow</strong> Mills, is located within the<strong>Ludlow</strong> Village Historic District. The members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ludlow</strong> Historical Commission support this endeavor as thebuilding remains in very good structural condition and is well suited for the proposed project.In December, members <strong>of</strong> the Commission, attended a program, "The Re-Emergence <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ludlow</strong> Mills" at the<strong>Ludlow</strong> Mill complex. The program was sponsored by Westmass Area Development Corporation with speakersrepresenting the businesses involved in helping to get this project <strong>of</strong>f the ground. A new health care facility byHealth South is planned for erection on Mill property. Another proposed project in the very near future is thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> 83 units <strong>of</strong> senior independent housing for the Mill property. The <strong>Ludlow</strong> Mill Complex is locatedwithin the <strong>Ludlow</strong> Village Historic District.The members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ludlow</strong> Historical Commission support this preservation and redevelopment <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ludlow</strong> MillComplex.The <strong>Ludlow</strong> Historical Commission books on <strong>Ludlow</strong>' history are available for sale in the town clerk's <strong>of</strong>fice at<strong>Ludlow</strong> <strong>Town</strong> Hall. The books are as follows: A HISTORY OF LUDLOW, MASSACHUSETTS 1774-1974,IMAGES OF AMERICA: LUDLOW, REMEMBERING WORLD WAR 11, and COLOR THE ABC'S OFLUDLOW.76
