The <strong>CHHSLs</strong> presented <strong>in</strong> this document are NOT adequate to evaluate ALLenvironmental conditions at ALL contam<strong>in</strong>ated sites. Other environmentalconcerns posed by the presence <strong>of</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation at a site may <strong>in</strong>clude:• Leach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ants from soil to groundwater and subsequentimpacts to groundwater quality;• Intrusion <strong>of</strong> subsurface vapors <strong>in</strong>to basements or build<strong>in</strong>gs withsubstandard ventilation systems and subsequent impacts to <strong>in</strong>door air;• Uptake <strong>of</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ants <strong>in</strong> edible fruit and vegetables and subsequent<strong>in</strong>take by humans;• Exposure <strong>of</strong> children and teachers at school sites;• Toxicity to terrestrial flora and fauna;• Gross contam<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g nuisance (odors, etc.) and aestheticconcerns.A summary <strong>of</strong> potential environmental concerns that may also be relevant at a sitefor a particular chemical is also provided <strong>in</strong> Table 1.The <strong>CHHSLs</strong> specifically do not address contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> groundwater, surfacewater or sediment or the erosion <strong>of</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ated soils and subsequent run<strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong>toa nearby wetland, stream or other aquatic habitat. Contam<strong>in</strong>ation identified <strong>in</strong>these media or that may threaten these media must be considered separately.References for evaluation <strong>of</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ants <strong>in</strong> these media are provided <strong>in</strong> Chapter4.The soil gas <strong>CHHSLs</strong> for the <strong>in</strong>trusion <strong>of</strong> vapors <strong>in</strong>to build<strong>in</strong>gs may not beadequately conservative for estimat<strong>in</strong>g impacts to <strong>in</strong>door air <strong>in</strong> poorly ventilatedbasements or build<strong>in</strong>gs with substandard ventilation systems <strong>in</strong> general.Additional guidance on this subject is provided <strong>in</strong> Section 2.5.2.The <strong>CHHSLs</strong> for direct-exposure to soils concerns are calculated assum<strong>in</strong>g thatspecific exposure pathways are complete for the human receptor: <strong>in</strong>cidental soil<strong>in</strong>gestion, dermal absorption <strong>of</strong> chemicals <strong>in</strong> soil, and <strong>in</strong>halation <strong>of</strong> vapors orparticulate matter <strong>in</strong> ambient (outdoor) air. For volatile chemicals, the soil gas<strong>CHHSLs</strong> are calculated assum<strong>in</strong>g that the exposure pathway <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>halation <strong>of</strong>January 20051-4CHHSLS
