Just so in radio photography,it is a matter ofsimple mechanism, and an acquired skill in its use.The author expects to see, very soon, the radioamateurs using flash-light lamps and electric penswhere they now use headphones; and halftones orpotassium cells where they now use microphones,for the radio problem between the two is practicallythe same if anything rather more simple withlight than with sound. And new means for modulating electric current by changing light values may beexpected when the American boy starts to play withthis new toy.There has been a veritable army of engineersengaged in the development of radio as a service tothe ear, while relatively few engineers have beendeveloping radio as a service to the eye.It is believed that the distant electric modulationof light for many purposes will soon become a commonphenomena and eventually of inestimable service inscience, in engineering, in industry, and in the home.Nor will this service be confined to radio. Presentmetallic channels now employed for other purposes,i. e., high tension power lines, railroad rails, citylighting wires, and water pipes, can be made a newsource of revenue, and at a ridiculously insignificantcost.Radio is none the less valuable by reason of itsapplication as such a rider on the present metallicgrids of every city, and of interurban connections.There are many channels where only space radio canbe employed, but the neglect of the application ofhigh frequency currents to metallic channels whichlead into every place of business, and into everyhome, is unnecessary waste.The author confidently believes the application of
these several ideas to the control of light at distantpoints is the next great advance in electricity, and tohasten such development the information in thefollowing pages is set down to assist the researchworker and the application engineer. The mechanisms and circuits herein disclosed may be acceptedwith assurance.With a radio photographic technique, the result often years of concentration on this subject, it may beasserted with confidence that the requirement of aparticular application rather than a particularmachine is the governing factor in each case; forwith full working knowledge of the art, and thespecial application requirements known, the designof the machine best adapted to that service is asimple matter.THE AUTHOR.
