Inserting ImplantsExplaining the Insertion Procedure for Jadelle and NorplantA woman who has chosen implantsneeds to know what will happen duringinsertion. The following descriptioncan help explain the procedure toher. Learning to insert and removeimplants requires training and practiceunder direct supervision. Therefore,this description is a summary and notdetailed instructions.Inserting implants usually takes only afew minutes but can sometimes takelonger, depending on the skill of theprovider. Related complications arerare and also depend on the skill of theprovider. (Implanon is inserted with aspecially made applicator similar to asyringe. It does not require an incision.)3.The provider makes a smallincision in the skin on theinside of the upper arm.1.The provider uses properinfection-prevention procedures.4.The provider inserts theimplants just under the skin.The woman may feel somepressure or tugging.2.The woman receives an injection oflocal anesthetic under the skin ofher arm to prevent pain while theimplants are being inserted. Thisinjection may sting. She stays fullyawake throughout the procedure.5.After all implants are inserted,the provider closes the incisionwith an adhesive bandage.Stitches are not needed.
