Performing the Vasectomy ProcedureExplaining the ProcedureA man who has chosen a vasectomy needs to know what will happen duringthe procedure. The following description can help explain the procedureto him. Learning to perform a vasectomy takes training and practice underdirect supervision. Therefore, this description is a summary and notdetailed instructions.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.The provider uses proper infection-prevention procedures at all times(see Infection Prevention in the Clinic, p. 312).The man receives an injection of local anesthetic in his scrotum toprevent pain. He stays awake throughout the procedure.The provider feels the skin of the scrotum to find each vas deferens—the 2 tubes in the scrotum that carry sperm.The provider makes a puncture orincision in the skin:– Using the no-scalpel vasectomytechnique, the provider graspsthe tube with specially designedforceps and makes a tinypuncture in the skin at themidline of the scrotum with aspecial sharp surgical instrument.– Using the conventionalprocedure, the provider makes1 or 2 small incisions in the skinwith a scalpel.EngenderHealthNo Scapel VasectomyFig 18The provider lifts out a small loop of each vas from the punctureLaura Pardi Duprey (corrections only)or incision.
