Corporate responsibilityAt Carlyle, we believe creating value means more than providing good returnsto investors by building better companies that create more jobs. It also meanshelping to improve the future and providing hope to people throughout the worldby building better communities. That’s why Carlyle professionals contribute theirtime and talents to add value to the places they call home in ways that bringemployees together as One Carlyle working for a common purpose.In 2005, we established The Carlyle Group Volunteer and WealthSharing Program. Carlyle employees are encouraged to take oneworkday per year to volunteer with colleagues for a charity orgood cause in their local community.In 2008, Carlyle employees donated holiday gifts to familiesin need in cities around the world, including London, New Yorkand Washington, DC. Employees also built houses in partnershipwith Habitat for Humanity, sorted and distributed food atarea food banks, donated blood, and contributed and assembledbook bags filled with school supplies to 200 Washington, DCelementary school students.In China, RMB1 million (US$143,000) was donated to theChinese Red Cross in 2008 on behalf of Carlyle to help withthe relief and recovery efforts following the earthquake in theSichuan Province. A letter expressing our concern and supportwas sent to the Chinese Ambassador to the United States.In Europe, volunteers helped renovate a building and transformit into affordable housing in South London.Our Wealth Sharing Program supports Carlyle employeesin their choice of charitable giving by matching on a dollar-fordollarbasis up to $1,000 per year contributions made to educationaland humanitarian organizations. In 2008, Carlyle matchedcharitable donations on behalf of its employees to 175 organizationsworldwide.58 The Carlyle Group 2008
At the 6th Year Walk & Run Together in Tokyo,Carlyle employees teamed up and ran alongsideindividuals with intellectual disabilities in a 10K runaround the Imperial Palace. Participants helped teammateswith disabilities experience the joy of competition.Sponsored by the NPO Special Olympics JapanCommittee, the event helps build stronger communitiesand fosters a better understanding of the valueand unique gifts of people with disabilities.In partnership with Habitat for Humanity,Carlyle employees played a significant rolein transforming empty lots into new homesfor families in need. Three groups of 10 to 15employees each from Carlyle’s Washington,DC office volunteered to help give two familiesa safe, affordable place to live. Employeesat every level joined together and helpedconstruct the frame, install siding and paintthe homes.At the Tokyo Municipal Birds Sanctuary Park,Carlyle employees helped clean the grounds tomake a better place for both birds and the peoplewho enjoy watching them. In addition to helpingpreserve nature, volunteering gives employeesthe opportunity to grow, bond and experiencegoodwill that is carried back to the workplace.2008 The Carlyle Group 59
