David Pruyne, Ira Ames,Mira Krendel, Vladimir SirotkinFall Semester, odd yearsPrerequisite:College of Graduate Studies’ Core CurriculumClass Size:Limited to 12 students.<strong>Course</strong> Description: Graduate Cellular Anatomywill provide an opportunity for graduate studentsto independently visualize cells, tissues, and organsof the human body by direct light-microscopicobservation of prepared histologic specimens anddevelop their teaching and presentation skills.<strong>Course</strong> instructors will give introductory lectures onthe histology of the basic tissue types. Each lecturewill be followed by a guided laboratory sessionwhere each student will use their own universitymicroscope to explore these tissue types. <strong>Course</strong>participants will select organ systems of interestand prepare presentations on the histology ofthose organ systems and present it to the class.Digital images taken from the class slide sets will beprovided to enhance student presentations. Studentpresentations will also be followed by a laboratorysession for students to explore that organ system.Students will use advance reading of a textbookand instructor guidance to aid in visualization ofhistologic specimens of the organ system of theday. Grading will be based on class participation,presentation, and a short paper detailing aspects ofcellular anatomy important to the student’s thesisresearch.Textbook:A combined text and color atlas of histology willbe required. Suitable examples include those byJunquiera, Ross, Wheater, or Kerr, available at thebookstore and on reserve in the library.
