Shillitoe, PhDPrerequisite: Must have chosen a thesis advisorPeriod offered:Spring<strong>Course</strong> description: Students will learn the essentialfeatures of writing research proposals, with anemphasis on the requirements of the NIH.In the first half of the course the principles of clear,unambiguous writing will be presented in lectures,accompanied by analysis of good and bad examples.Each week students will have a written assignmentin which they prepare the different sections ofa proposal that is focused on their own area ofresearch. Students are expected to have some helpfrom their advisors for the completion of eachassignment.In the second half of the course the students willmeet regularly with the course instructor to reviewtheir assignments, which will then be revised asnecessary. The assignments will then be assembledinto a complete proposal, suitable for submissionto a national-level granting agency. In the finalsessions of the course the students will meet as agroup to review and discuss each others’ proposals.Students are storongly encouraged to consult withthe instructor before enrolling, in order to ensurethat the course will meet their needs.The grade for the course will be based on effort andimprovement.
