8Leading by example:How two veteranswent from Bosniato the boardroom.EMPLOYEES COLLEAGUES PEERSWhen mutual friends first introduced Christine and Brian Dorfler, they wereboth second lieutenants in the Army on a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia.“It’s not the most common place to meet a guy,” Christine said, with a laugh.“You’re living in a tent, dressed in fatigues. But, I agreed to meet him for lunch.”The rest, you could say, is military history.TODAY, CHRISTINE DORFLER, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, NBC OWNEDTELEVISION STATIONS, AND BRIAN DORFLER, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT,NBCUNIVERSAL HUMAN RESOURCES, SERVE AS TRUE ROLE MODELS—NOT JUST FOR VETERANS WHO WANT TO TRANSITION INTO ACORPORATE ENVIRONMENT, BUT ALSO FOR ANYONE PASSIONATEABOUT A CAUSE, AND WHO WANTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE INTHE WORLD.After returning to the United States at the endof their active assignments, Christine and Briangot married and joined General Electric (GE)through the Junior Officer Leadership Program, which was developed to help military officerstransfer skills learned during their service to acorporate environment. After moving to thenGE’s subsidiary, NBCUniversal, the Dorflersbegan meeting with other veterans in thecompany to exchange ideas about recruitingand retaining more military personnel. “At thattime, from a diversity perspective, veteranswere not a focal point,” Brian remembered.“We decided to show people there’s anotherangle to diversity that they might not ordinarilythink about.”An informal veterans group was embraced byNBCUniversal and quickly became an officiallyrecognized employee resource group, theNBCUniversal Veterans Network. Over the years, the team has worked to help raise awareness ofthe special skills veterans can offer and thespecial challenges they face when entering thecorporate world.“The military is a very different culture,” Christinepointed out. “If you’re coming back from Iraq orAfghanistan, you’re coming into a much less rigidand formal culture, and you might not know howto present yourself. How do you put together arésumé, how do you interview—these skills are crucialfor people looking to build a successful career.”Through his work with Human Resources, Brianis also committed to helping employees currentlyactive in the military veterans, and those whoare considering it. “We’re making sure we havethe right benefits and programs set up for folks, whether they’re in the service, reserves, activereserves or the National Guard,” he said.“We want to show that we don’t just allow peopleto get involved in the military— we support it,and we will take care of them.”DIVERSITY.NBCUNI.COMCOMCAST.COM/DIVERSITY

That creative, nuancedapproach is what brought Lopez Negrete to the attention of NBCUniversal in2007. “They had the right mix of fresh thinking, passion for the business, andworld class media expertise,” Suzanne Cole, Executive Vice President forUniversal Pictures and Home Entertainment recalled. “The only thing they weremissing was an LA office.”“COMCAST-NBCUNIVERSAL REALLY VALUES WHAT DIVERSE SUPPLIERS BRINGTO THE TABLE,” SAID LOPEZ NEGRETE. “THEIR INTENT IS TRUE AND PUREWHEN THEY SAY THEY WANT TO ENGAGE MORE DEEPLY WITH A DIVERSEAUDIENCE. WITNESSING THE [DIVERSITY] IN PROGRAMMING HAS BEENPRETTY COOL— AND IT HAS BEEN LIFE CHANGING FOR OUR AGENCY.”That wasn’t a problem for long. 19Investing in innovation.Comcast created a $20 million fund to expand opportunities for minority entrepreneurs. The Comcast Ventures Catalyst Fund’s first investment was in the startup acceleratorDreamIt Ventures, which operates DreamIt Access. Through the Comcast VenturesCatalyst Fund we spot high-potential business ideas from a diverse group of founders, and help them tap into the Comcast NBCUniversal network as they build their companies. The Fund also makes initial investments in other early-stage ventures led by diverseentrepreneurs with innovative tech ideas.Keya Dannenbaum founded her successfulwebsite, ElectNext.com, with the helpof DreamIt Access, which gives opportunitiesto entrepreneurs who might struggle togain access to longstanding, traditionalventure capital circles. “As people build astartup, there’s a heavy emphasis on “fit,”meaning sometimes founders will naturallygravitate toward people who look likethemselves,” Keya pointed out. “And, ifyou only have one type of person workingon solutions, you’ll keep getting the sameideas over and over again.”Keya credits DreamIt Access not onlywith increasing the diversity of newstartup companies, but with diversifyingthe very ideas that they produce. From grocery store delivery servicesto online domestic manufacturingaggregators, twenty different minorityownedDreamIt Access ventures arealready propelling their businessesforward. “It was incredible in terms oflearning personally and professionally,”she said. “And the access to mentorsat Comcast definitely gave us an edge.”Comcast Ventures helps turn greatideas into powerful businesses.
