RCMP Internet specialists assisted with theinvestigation.Pflug said the case is definitely a warning for parents to check their children's online activities to makesure their they are not being victimized."Nowadays, we're giving kids hand-held devices that have wireless access. They've got access tocomputers, laptops ... netbooks, all those types of things. Doug Pflug says "The mom found out, she was checking her daughter's iPod and it'ssomething we would encourage every parent to do…from a victim's side as well as a perpetrator's side."The suspect's IP address was used to track him to southern Manitoba after a forensic examination of the iPodby Guelph's Technological Crimes/Child Exploitation Unit.On Friday, March 4, the Manitoba RCMP's Child Exploitation Unit and local police arrested the 15-year-old malein a town outside of Winnipeg and charged him with possession of child pornography.According to police the girl does not know the offender in this case. It remains unclear whether she will beasked to appear in court.Experts say an incident like this one could be devastating for both parties involved.Daniel Moore is with Guelph Family and Children's Services. Anne police Chief Marc Robichaud confirmed the 15-year-old was arrested Friday after the girl’s mother told police in Guelph, a city just southwest of Toronto, that her daughterhad been contacted online to entice her to send nude photographs of herself electronically.“What we’re investigating, specifically, is related to child pornography,” Robichaud said Tuesday, adding it will be “probably next week some time” before any charge is laid aftercomputer equipment, which was seized Friday, is analysed with help from RCMP. “We still have to review a lot of material to determine exactly what we have.”The mother’s complaint led police in Guelph to examine the girl’s iPod, and that investigation prompted them to contact a Manitoba RCMP child exploitation unit about the suspect inthe town about 25 km southeast of Winnipeg.“We haven’t had any dealings with him before,” Robichaud said of the boy, who was released to his parents’ custody soon after he was arrested and questioned.It’s unclear whether the boy knew the girl’s age during their online contact.Though the Mounties played a part in the investigation, Manitoba RCMP spokesman Const. Miles Hiebert said only that “our people gave them some assistance” in the probe. Herefused to elaborate.Robichaud said it appears the boy came into contact with the girl online through a “social networking group” other than Facebook.
