You will alsolearn to be an effective coach to differenttypes of clients. This will be accomplishedby enabling you to gain ‘real-life’ experience,and by experimenting with different practicalskills, techniques, styles and situations thatwill enhance your effectiveness.Principles of Coachingand Mentoring at WorkDevelops your ability to critically analyseand reflect upon coaching and mentoringtheory and practice within a variety ofsocial and organisational contexts. Thisinvolves engagement with various theoreticalmodels and reflection on different coachingand mentoring practices. A key aspectof this process will require you to criticallyreflect on your values, beliefs andassumptions in coaching and mentoring.Psychology of Coachingand MentoringProvides you with the key psychologicaltheory and practice for coaching andmentoring practitioners. You will explorevarious psychological and emotionaldimensions that underpin coaching andmentoring relationships in a range ofenvironments. The different techniquesand models will be explored, and youwill consider how these may be used toinform coaching and mentoring practice.The philosophy and theory of the differentschools that have evolved within theseorientations will also be explored, andboundaries and ethical issues will beconsidered and respected.Associated careersThe course will appeal to internal orexternal HR specialists, occupationalpsychologists, and consultants wishing toextend their coaching and mentoring skillsand knowledge. It is also appropriate forbusiness and management, or social ornatural sciences graduates who want todevelop as coaches, mentors and changeagents, and those who are alreadyworking in areas of mentoring andcoaching. On completing the PostgraduateCertificate, students will be able to applyfor the European Mentoring and CoachingCouncil Practitioner Level Accreditation.Entry requirementsYou should normally hold a first Honoursdegree in social science from a recognisedinstitution (minimum Lower Second ClassHonours), or an equivalent recognisedprofessional qualification, in a businessor social science-related discipline froman approved awarding body. Non-UKacademic qualifications will be assessedagainst accreditation by the British Council/nariC. You may already have developedsubstantial knowledge, experience andskills in a relevant field, and candidates withextensive experience who do not possessa first degree can also be considered.You will need fluent written and spokenEnglish to study at postgraduate level.If your first language is not English, anattainment of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalentmust be demonstrated.
