From the Editors DeskA relaxing Saturday lunch at thePalms restaurantIt had been a fairly hectic week and the weekend provided a perfect opportunity to enjoy a well earned restful andtasty Saturday lunch. We headed to the Palms restaurant at the City Club Phase IV to partake of their Indian food astheir ambience encourages relaxation and we could well imagine sitting on a palm fringed beach in Goa letting thecool breeze take over our senses.I was shaken out of my reverie when a glass of chaach was placed before me and before I could protest that I had notordered this drink, the polite steward informed me that this was a welcome drink. I loved the traditional curd baseddrink, christened ‘white beer’ by many for the drinking pleasure it gives in summer. I am told that the Welcome DrinkOptions include not just Chaach, but also Jaljeera and Ambi Panna impressing me with the sheer versatility of the F & Bteam.Continuing the authentic Indian cuisine mode, we then moved on to the starter, Reshmi Kebab which entailed juicyboneless chicken pieces wrapped in an egg coating. Delicately flavoured and beautifully presented, this kebab justmelts in the mouth. The fresh coriander-mint (dhaniya-pudina) chutney is a great accompaniment providing thenecessary tang that spices things up perfectly. The traditional tamatar dhaniya shorba that we ordered next was not just a palate cleanser, but also a great appetizerfor the sumptuous main course of Nihari Gosht and Murg Qorma as the non-vegetarian dishes and the Dum AlooBhojpuri and Dal Makhani complementing the vegetarian palate along with a plate of assorted breads. The Nihari Gosht came with a rich cooked-with-the-bone-gravy which tasted finger licking good with the hot rotis andnaan. The blend of Indian spices and the cooking technique showcased the chefs’ expertise. It was cooked so perfectlythat one could easily suck the meat off the bone without it falling off on its own. The Chicken Qorma complementedthe rich mutton dish with its subtle flavours and aromas so different from the typical chicken recipes. The vegetarian fare came with an interesting twist and I enjoyed the Dum Aloo Bhojpuri with a unique spiced paneerstuffing served with mild yet delicious gravy. The traditional Dal Makhani never disappoints at the City Club, and thistime was no different. Our steward mentioned that the month of August heralds a Biryani Festival and there will be quite a variety of specialbiryanis conjured by the chef. He was pleased to recommend the Gosht Biryani with a Buraani Raita for the nonvegetariansand an innovative Kabuli Biryani for the Vegetarians. Even though we had packed in a big lunch already, wegave in to our curiosity and the ever ready adventurous palate to check out the fare. We were certainly pleased withthe recommendation as we enjoyed the perfectly cooked delicious gosht (mutton) along with the exquisitely flavouredand fragrant long grained rice. The choice for dessert inevitably veered to the traditional Rasmalai which was plump and juicy as it is supposed to beand soaked in a not-too-over-sweetened milky syrup with just the right consistency. The kesar lent it a unique essenceand the Chef proudly told us that this was an in house dessert prepared fresh every time. Other options of Tille WaliKulfi and Gulab Jamun are also popular but the Rasmalai tops my list.We thoroughly enjoyed our sumptuous Saturday lunch and recommend you take the time to check it out too!The City ClubPhase IIIMoulsari Road, DLF City Phase - III,Gurgaon - 122002, HaryanaPh: +91 124-4999100The City ClubPhase IVOpposite Galleria, DLF Phase - IV,Gurgaon - 122002, HaryanaPh: +91 124-4129100/101The City ClubPhase VOpposite Trinity Towers, DLF Phase - VGurgaon - 122002, HaryanaPh: +91 124-4949101

FINE TRAVELMount Abu– Kirit KiranTravel offers a distinct, if not unique, perspective to every individual whodecides to soak up what is offered. Repletewith charming anecdotes and referencesin Vedic/Puranic traditions, its longdocumented and architectural historymakes this Indian city quite fascinating.Situated at a height of 1722 m abovesea-level, Mount Abu with its lushlandscapes condensed in a small regionoffers an in-budget and much neededrespite from the scorching heat of theNCR. Charles McCann, noted naturalistfrom erstwhile Bombay referred to thissmall retreat as an ‘oasis in the Rajputanadesert and a delightful place for aholiday’ in the 1940s. Oneof the common threads is the story ofArbuda (a powerful snake and the sonof Himalaya) rescuing the divine cowKamdhenu from a chasm by liftingthe land of Arbudanchal. The regionalso boasts of many renowned sages.Prominent amongst them is the greatSage Vashishtha who conducted amighty yagna to protect the earth fromdemons thereby creating four Rajputanaclans from the fire of the agnikund. This spot is called Gaumukh (Cow-Mouth) and is one of the primary touristattractions of this town. The scenicbackdrop has a natural spring flowingout of what appeared to be a cow’s headwith modern day sculpting ‘refining’ thepre-existing rock-cut avatar. That doesnot deter pious hearts to search out forsymbols of strengthening their faith inthe town that reportedly is the abode of33 crore Indian gods and goddesses. There is more than just that one templethat plays host to annals of historyand Vedic studies. The 9 th centuryAchaleshwar Temple that is supposedlybuilt around a toe impression of the Lordof Destruction, Shiva, speaks of a legendinvolving a pit that goes right downto the underworld. What is interestingto note at this spot is the four-tonnestatue of Nandi the Bull in panchdhaatu–silver, copper, brass, zinc and gold. The structure houses a Shivalinga inits natural form. In addition to theseimposing symbols of religion, there arecountless statues made of seeminglycrystalline substance.

The divine experience does not stop hereas the town has the famous Adhar Devitemple or the temple of Goddess Arbudalocated in a cave close by. The 365 stepsshould be undertaken as a journey tocatch not just the picturesque view ofthe lush green landscapes that makethis place serene, but also to capture thecave beauty of this temple. The two highlights of Mount Abu thatare enshrined in the minds of those withtheological pursuits and travelers arethe magnificent Dilwara Temples andthe Guru Shikhar for their remarkablyexquisite architecture. The marvelassociated with this famous pilgrimagefor followers of Jainism speaks richly oftheir carvings and the sheer beauty thatmakes these group of temples one ofthe finest in the country. Built between11-13 th century, there are a total of fivetemples of which twoare notably renowned allover for the magnificencedisplayed in theirstructure.Carved out of whitemarble in its entirety, theVimal Vasahi temple, dedicated to LordRishabhadev has someamazing carvings. Thegrand hall, called theRang Manda has a totalof twelve pillars that havefemale figurines includingsixteen Vidhyadevis orgoddesses of knowledgethat are shown holding adistinct symbol each. Thesecond is the 13 th centuryLuna Vasahi temple dedicated to LordNeminath and has some of the mostbeautiful carving work done on smallfigures. The brave Maharana Kumbha, who laid the foundation of Kumbhalgarhoutside Udaipur had a black stone pillarcalled Kirti Stambha installed just to theleft of this temple. The opulence in theoverall architecture and the delicacy ofthe marble work mark the passions ofover 1500 sculptors and 1200 labourerswho worked on them tirelessly. The climb to the highest peak is atrek/excursion that is mandatory inguidebooks and in the words of thelocals as well. In thesame vein, what good are landscapesif one does not venture into the MountAbu Wildlife Sanctuary spread over anarea of 114 square km. This green coveronce was home to both the lion andthe tiger last sighted in 1872 and 1970respectively. Botanists can have a massivefield day out here with over 112 plantfamilies, a diverse variety of orchids, wildroses and rare species of ferias. Animallovers can also take on an adventuretrip with their cameras ready to sightsloth bears, jackal, hyena, langur, wolf, sambhar, jungle cat among countlessother species. The same enthusiasmapplies to bird lovers who can seethe grey jungle fowl, green avadavatAmandava Formosa, and Gallus and RedSpurfowl that are in fair numbers.Another famous nature lover’s paradiseis Trevor’s Tank. Named after the Englishengineer who built this, the man madetank is used to breed crocodiles and isalso a bird watchers delight. Whether itis to spot the deadly marine creatures,or the black bear, this spot offers severalspotting stations that can be used totake snippets of flora and fauna out ofthe sanctuary. Those familiar with Mount Abu wouldalso be well versed with names such asNakki lake and Honeymoon Point thatare all to be seen the way they havebeen for a long time. Countless shopsselling Rajasthani handicraft are linedup all around the Nakki Lake and attractshoppers from all around. Bargainingand being the elusive customer is thekey to get what one wishes to bag inas souvenir. But there is another smallwater body called theMandakini Lake that isclose to the Achaleshwartemple. And those who arejust looking for a retreat for meditativepurposes should go to the WorldSpiritual University established by theBrahma Kumaris. This is small town, with a history thatconstantly blurs lines of knowledgewith mythology, and scenic beauty thatis at the threshold of an inevitable warof destruction with corrupt practicesthat have pillaged the entire area’s lushcover. When the readers of this piecetravel to Mount Abu to beat the heat, there should be an earnest attempt tomaintain the law of nature that will onlygive something back without asking foranything in return. FASHIONTrendyFootwear– Supriya Saran•••With the summerweather heating thingsup, it’s time to show offthose pretty pedicuredtoes, with sandals thatare funkier and trendierthan ever before.•••42 | CITY NEWSHaving a bad day at work?Feeling down and depressed?Need an instant ‘pick-me-up’?All you need to do is head for your favourite shoe store and splurgeon that trendy pair that you have been saving up for even when youdon’t have any real requirement for it!With the summer weather heatingthings up, it’s time to show offthose pretty pedicured toes, with sandalsthat are funkier and trendier than everbefore. While each one of us will havetheir own choice based on an inherentstyle, here is our list of the current ‘musthaves’based on worldwide trends thisyear.Topping the list is the Gladiator Sandal– an absolute treasure for the Indiansummer months. Inspired and namedafter footwear worn by gladiators inancient Rome, the Gladiator Sandals arestrappy with the more classic versionsfeaturing T-straps, thin leather soles, lowheels and several straps running acrossthe instep and ankle. You can pick up a metallic pair for anevening out or choose from a varietyof sturdy basic ones for your day wear.Embellished with crystals and funkybeads and also available in brilliantneon colours, prints and even patentleather, the Gladiator is laid back, butfashionable.Show off those slim pretty ankles asyou team up with summer dresses andcropped capris. Or simply wear themwith your favourite pair of jeans or achuridar suit to work. The versatile andfuss free Gladiator is definitely the ‘topof the pops’ this summer...and also apleasant respite from high heels.Running a very close second would bethe modest Chappal and the Morjari, more popularly known as ‘Juttie’ inNorth India. The classic KohlapuriChappal, worn by both men andwomen, is exquisitely handcraftedfootwear that originated in Kohlapur,Maharashtra. While regular Kohlapuri Chappals areideal for daily wear, these days you willfind a profusion of colours and metallicvariations to choose from. Adornedwith gold chord, zari strips, gota andeven pompoms, the Kohlapuri is classicsummer fare in India. Today you can alsoopt for a trendy wedge heeled kohlapurito add that cool quotient when teamedwith a sari. The Morjari or Juttie, a timelesstradition, is a trademark of royalty.Keeping the bonds of tradition andculture alive, the Juttie often adds toour sense of fashion and style while

emaining the most comfortablefootwear ever. They are available inmyriads of funky colours with differentadornments like beads, pearls, sequinsand gleaming stars, and are perfectwith anything that you wear. Abrilliantly coloured thread work pair ora shimmering sequined silver pair wouldgo equally well with your jeans as alsoyour cotton salwar kameez. While open toed sandals and footwearis a preferred choice in India keeping inmind the harsh summer sun, the WedgeSandal continues to be comfortable, super chic and trendy. Wedge heels arehaute again this spring and summer, and even though there are no limitswhen it comes to heel heights, there areplenty of lower-heeled wedges to choosefrom as well. The warm weather justtends to bring out footwear with rope, jute, woven and other textural accentsbecause these they look great withshorts and skirts. If you do choose someof those sky high Wedges, you may wantto look for styles with platform soles. Notonly will they help to counter the height, but they›re also a top footwear trendthemselves.Worldwide trends for this summer alsoinclude shoes with pointed toes, whichare sexy and feminine; shiny metallicfootwear in silver and gold; ballerinaflats in bright colours, floral printsembellished with ribbons and bows andthe extremely high stilettos...we aretalking 7 inches high here! Finally, colour them Neon. Yes, Neon is INand by adding a neon shoe or handbag aclassic outfit can simply come alive. Neongoes with almost anything and adds thatdash of colour to a monochromatic orcasual outfit. Most of us do not need a reason to goand buy footwear. The pairs already inthe cupboard are never enough. Thereis always room for one more – to matchthat dress you just bought ainwayee; foryour friends’ sangeet ceremony whereyou will need to look formal and yet becomfortable enough to dance; for Fridayoffice wear and of course, the countlessseasonal sales you must patronize … theexcuses and reason are always ready. But before you go shopping for a pair, listen to a humble word of advicefrom one passionate shoe-shoppingfanatic.While trends are always fun andstylish to follow, it’s what you are mostcomfortable wearing that matters most.So while the animal-print-Jimmy Choo orthe red-soled-Christian Louboutin wouldalso be a ‘must have’ for some, it’s thesandal in which we feel we can run amarathon that finally counts! No pointin ending up with blisters to ruin thatexpensive pedicure. •••Worldwide trends forthis summer includeshoes with pointed toes, which are sexy andfeminine; shiny metallicfootwear in silver andgold; ballerina flats inbright colours, floralprints embellished withribbons and bows andthe extremely highstilettos...we are talking7 inches high here!•••CITY NEWS | 43

HUMOURThe Powerof π (Pi)– Krishan KalraClass VI student could tell you whatA π (Pi) is. Yet, ask many 50-year-oldsespecially the ‘M.A History’ type andchances are that they would either thinkof a dissect pie or the smallest Indiancoin till the Second World War, 192 ofwhich made a rupee! My story is aboutone such guy.I am a regular walker in our colony’scentral park. With a beautifully laid-outgarden, lovely trees manicured grass, neatly paved wide walk-ways, it’s anoasis in the midst of roads packed withsmoke-belching vehicles. I walk at a fairlybrisk pace, always clockwise, sticking tothe outer edge of the peripheral track. Itmust be quite fast because most peoplefind it tough to keep pace. Actuallyit’s strange; I can’t run at all – a fewhundred yards is enough to tire me out –but I can give most walkers a run (oops!)for their money. This guy, about 10 years my junior inage, also walks fast and seems to bealways trying to race me. Most peoplewalk in the same direction, so often44 | CITY NEWSwe don’t even cross each other. Butwhenever we do, he’s on my heels. Oneday I met him in the first round itself. My friend was walking in the oppositedirection and we crossed each other.Instinctively, we both noted the spot. Inthe second round he had gained somedistance and yet more in the third. Hisjoy knew no bounds. He was all smilesand couldn’t contain himself as he flexedhis arms and said “Aaj aap peeche rehgaye.” (Today you have lost).I told him he was mistaken, it wasonly the “Power of Pi”. The guy wasflabbergasted. “What do you mean?Haven’t I beaten you squarely,” he wasquite brusque. I asked him to changedirection. I did likewise and we startedagain. This time he lost. The guy couldn’tbelieve it. He increased his pace butagain he was beaten. He looked askanceat me and I again told him “it’s only thepower of Pi”. He seemed thoroughlyconfused. For the next few days, I deliberatelychanged direction after every tworounds. He did the same, always walkingin the opposite direction. He’d winwhenever he walked anti clockwise andlose in the reverse. I’d only repeat “Thepower of Pi” every time we crossed. Bythe fourth day our man was a nervouswreck. He folded his hands and beggedto be told about this Pi. “I’ll never raceyou again, but pray, who the devil is Pi?”he pleaded. We sat down on a bench and explainedto him the meaning of Pi. It is the ratiobetween the circumference and thediameter of a circle - the value, to thenth place of decimal, 3.142857 orapproximately 22/7. When he walkedanti-clockwise and stuck to the left, hewas on the inner edge and thus, on ashorter diameter circle. The track beingwide, if we walked 1-1/2 meter apart hewas covering almost 10 meters less. Inthe opposite direction, I had the sameadvantage. Now he’s a relieved man and doesn’tbother to race me any longer.
