Having never lost sight <strong>of</strong> its responsibilities as a change agent for acceleratingthe pace <strong>of</strong> socio-economic transformation across communities, DLF considers socialresponsibility an integral part <strong>of</strong> business strategy and conduct, and the establishment <strong>of</strong>the DLF Foundation reinforces this commitment.Under the direct patronage <strong>of</strong> Mr. K P Singh, Chairman - DLF Limited, the DLF Foundationhas been formed with the mission <strong>of</strong> ‘Building India’ from the grass roots by creatingsustainable eco-friendly programmes. PrinceCharles on his part had introduced <strong>The</strong> Prince’sCharities to the DLF Chairman. <strong>The</strong> Prince’sCharities is the formal omnibus name for 19operational charities. <strong>The</strong> formal appointment <strong>of</strong>Mr. K P Singh as the Head <strong>of</strong> the Indian AdvisoryBoard <strong>of</strong> Prince’s Charities has paved the way forcollaborations that will work towards improvingthe built environment, creating sustainableurban development, striving for integrated ruraldevelopment, responsible business, alternativeeducation, healthcare and promoting traditionalskills, knowledge and arts.<strong>The</strong> Prince’s Charities is the largest multi-causecharitable enterprise in the United Kingdom. <strong>The</strong>Charities are active across a broad range <strong>of</strong> areasincluding opportunity and enterprise, the builtenvironment, responsible business, educationand health. In order tomake a small contribution towards theongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts,the DLF-CSR under the aegis <strong>of</strong> the DLFHR Department organised a fund-raiser,on a voluntary basis, amongst DLFemployees across India. <strong>The</strong> employeescame forward in large numbers toextend their support, with each <strong>of</strong> themdonating one day’s basic salary towardsthis noble cause. A total <strong>of</strong> Rs. 40 lacs hasbeen raised by the employees and themanagement, and is being contributedto the ‘Prime Minister Relief Fund’. Wethank all the employees for comingforward and helping the flood victims intheir hour <strong>of</strong> need.


HealthDLF PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRESCommunity OutreachActivitiesDLF - Pratham Learning EnhancementProgram (LEP) - 2007-08 is currentlyoperational in 30 government schoolsspread across 25 villages <strong>of</strong> Gurgaondistrict. In a recent development, LEPhas been upgraded to English learningand a DLF Pratham library is also beingestablished in each school. <strong>The</strong> previousmodel was restricted to enhancing learninglevels in Hindi.<strong>The</strong> project will now cover threecomponents: ‘Learning to Read’ classesfor children lagging behind in classes Ito V, English Module for classes II to V &Library facility for all children <strong>of</strong> the school.Pratham’s ‘Learning to Read’ module is anaccelerated learning programme designedfor children <strong>of</strong> 6 years and above, whoare unable to read simple text fluentlyor/and are unable to do simple arithmeticcorrectly. Complimenting this, the DLF-Pratham Library program is designedto develop reading habits in children byintroducing them to the interesting world<strong>of</strong> story books. Apart from this, poemrecitation, storytelling, painting, roleplaying are some other activities that havebeen taken up to make learning a joyousexperience for the children. <strong>The</strong> Englishmedium learning and the thrust on readinghabits will add new life to the LEP.Syllabus Components <strong>of</strong> English moduleConversationBased on a Q & A plan, the conversation component will help children to build confidenceto converse in English. <strong>The</strong> teaching module and learning ranges from the simple format(understanding simple questions and answer in YES and NO) to complex format (answeringin full sentences).ReadingCommences with learning <strong>of</strong> consonants and respective sounds, followed by blendedsounds ( Sl – Cr – St etc) and single sounds or digraphs (Sh, Ch, Ph, Dh etc). This is followedby introduction <strong>of</strong> vowels, followed by word making. Reading material (from simple wordsto paragraphs) is distributed to enhance reading abilities. <strong>The</strong>reafter, training in basicwriting follows.On 15 th August, the Swapana Sarthak School, an informallearning platform for primary level children set up by DLF,celebrated the Independence Day with great enthusiasmand fanfare. Students <strong>of</strong> all batches participated and puttogether a one hour song and dance show revolvingaround the theme <strong>of</strong> the Independence Day. Apartfrom facilitating free-<strong>of</strong>-cost learning facilities, SwapanaSarthak undertakes various activities regularly, whichinclude organising outings and functions, to boost theconfidence and morale <strong>of</strong> the young ones.ON THE ANVILRenovations at ChakarpurGovernment schoolTo create better schooling infrastructure and to inculcatea sense <strong>of</strong> quality learning amongst the students, DLF-CSR is undertaking renovation <strong>of</strong> the assembly hall atthe Government School located at village Chakarpur,Gurgaon. On the request <strong>of</strong> the local community andthe school children, the renovated structure will providea state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art hall, where not only students fromthis government school but also from other adjoininggovernment schools can organise inter-school culturalevents, dramatics, debates, seminars, lectures etc.Community Outreach activities arebeing taken up proactively across allDLF Primary Health Centres (PHC).To increase the awareness <strong>of</strong> thesurrounding communities, paramedicstaff is going door-to-door to informthe local people about the availableservices at the respective PHCs.Pediatric Health Campfor Aanganwadi ChildrenOn 19 th September, three doctorsfrom DLF-CSR partner NGO, MamtaHealth Institute for Mother and Child,conducted a pediatric health camp forthe children <strong>of</strong> Anganwadi in villageNawada Fatehpur.Awareness on Dengueand MalariaWith the help <strong>of</strong> Panchayatrepresentatives, a community meetingwas organised at the Nawada FatehpurPHC on 2 nd September. <strong>The</strong> DLF-PHCmedical <strong>of</strong>ficers conducted a communitytalk on various issues relating to themosquito-borne menaces – Dengue andMalaria. Participants were sensitised onvarious preventive measures to avoidthe spread <strong>of</strong> such diseases, the earlysymptoms and first aid. Since Gurgaonhad witnessed a Dengue outbreakduring the monsoons this year, thismeeting was deemed to be timely andrelevant.General Health CapsuleIn order to increase awareness <strong>of</strong> therural communities on matters relatingto general health care, a meeting wasorganised in village Hyatpur on 27 thSeptember. <strong>The</strong> deputed lady doctorsensitised the participants on pregnancycare, safe drinking water practices andsanitation issues.

In fact, this is thetime for action since plantation drives aremost successful during the monsoons. <strong>The</strong>survival rate <strong>of</strong> young saplings is higherduring the rains. Partnerships are beingdeveloped to execute the project. Once the project is established here, it will then bereplicated in other states across India. <strong>The</strong> focus will be to create a model organic farm,which will encompass training <strong>of</strong> farmers and motivating them to ‘go organic’, as well asbranding and marketing <strong>of</strong> the organic produce along with established partners.Award for InnovationDLF pioneers New Age Energy Generation<strong>The</strong> ‘National Award for Excellence inEnergy Management’ was received byDLF Commercial Developers (DCDL)for the Natural Gas-based cogenerationsystem installed at DLF Infinity Towerssince March 2006. <strong>The</strong> first-<strong>of</strong>-its-kindenvironment-friendly energy generationplant in India, with a 9.8 MW capacity and3472 TR (tonnes <strong>of</strong> refrigeration) coolingcapacity was recognised by CII IGBC forusing the best innovative technology.<strong>The</strong> award was presented to DCDL at theprestigious award distribution function<strong>of</strong> the ‘National Award for Excellence inEnergy Management’ held in August atPune.Mr K K Bhattacharya, Sr Executive Director, DLF Utilities,recieving the award


VOICESWhat does ‘Aap ki Rasoi’ mean to you?“<strong>The</strong> last issue <strong>of</strong> the CSR Newsletter introduced the ‘Aapki Rasoi’ initiative taken up by DLF-CSR, which is the‘free daily meal programme’ for the poor and disabled,being run at the India Gate lawns in New Delhi.This issue, we feature a voice from the crowdtelling us how ‘Aap Ki Rasoi’ is helping him tobuild his life...PRADEEP KUMARAge: 18 yearsPlace <strong>of</strong> Origin: PatnaYears in Delhi: 8Occupation: Runs arented-out PCO trolleyI started my life in Delhi by picking ragsand doing odd jobs. After four years, bythe will <strong>of</strong> God, I came in contact withBadal, the owner <strong>of</strong> PCO trolleys, who<strong>of</strong>fered me to run one <strong>of</strong> his trolleyson a rent <strong>of</strong> Rs.100 per day. I stationedmyself at the busy India Gate area anddid good business in the evenings.However sending money home alwaysremained a dream.Thanks to the free food I get from ‘Aapki Rasoi’, this dream stands fulfilledtoday. Earlier, I had to close shop andcommute a long way from India Gateto stalls near Park Hotel to find cheapfood everyday. Owing to this, myearnings certainly used to get effected.Now, I work through the day as I havemy meals provided for by DLF.<strong>The</strong> food van arrives exactly at 12.30pm and I know it is time to take a break.I can work more so I earn more andyes, since I don’t spend a penny on myfood, so <strong>of</strong> course I save more too! I’vestarted sending a part <strong>of</strong> my earningsto Patna, and you know what – myfather has already started renovatingthe leaking ro<strong>of</strong> back home.
