AccessoriesReplacement Bulbs - IntroductionHella marine bulbs are top quality products sourced from leading international bulb manufacturers.Below is an introduction on each bulb type.Incandescent BulbsIncandescent bulbs, also referred to as ‘standard’ bulbs, produce lightby heating a filament until it is white hot. Incandescent bulbs becomeprogressively dimmer over the course of their service life, becauseheating the filament makes it slowly burn away, with residue settling onthe inside of the glass envelope.Halogen BulbsHalogen bulbs contain a gas mixture which consists of halogencompounds (usually compounds of iodine or bromine). Light isproduced in much the same way as an incandescent bulb. However, when particles burn off the filament, they are returned by a chemicalprocess involving the halogen in the bulb. This means that the lightproduced by a halogen bulb is relatively consistent over the course ofthe bulb’s entire service life.Xenon Gas Discharge (HID) BulbsXenon bulbs use an electric current arc passed through Xenon gas, rather than a filament, to produce light. This method requires minimal electric current draw compared tofilament lighting, and its output is comparable to daylight. As the human eye has evolved to see in daylight, Xenon lightingcauses less eye strain than other bulb types, making it a moreconvenient and safer night lighting option. Xenon bulbs increasereflections on road signs and markings.Advantages of Gas Discharge (HID) LightingHID lighting is highly energy efficient producing approximately 90lumens per watt compared to a quartz halogen lamp of approximately25 lumens per watt.• Light colour very similar to daylight – reduces eye strain• Steady brightness levels even if power supply varies• Impact and vibration resistant light arc ensures a bulb service lifefive times longer than standard bulbsLight OutputOperating Voltage % Light Output %85 5390 6795 83100 100(Based on a mean operating voltage of 100% = 13.5V or 27V)Light output for a filament lightsource is dependent on the voltage.Low voltage causes low output andshorter life, especially for halogenbulbs, because regeneration does notoccur. Over voltage causes excessivetungsten erosion and the filament mayprematurely break due to the filamentbeing closer to its melting point.114
