See Support.You may have encountered a compiler bug. Unfortunately, the compiler is a set ofrelatively complex programs that probably contain bugs. Our front end (the partthat does syntax and semantic analysis of the input C programs) is particularlyrobust, as we license the LCC software, a highly respected ANSI C compiler frontend. We test our compilers thoroughly, including semi-exhaustively testing thebasic operations of all the supported integer operators and data types.Nevertheless, despite all our testing, the compiler may still generate incorrectcode. The odds are very low, though, as most of the support issues are notcompiler errors even if the customer is “certain of it.” If you think you have found acompiler problem, it always helps if you try to simplify your program or the functionso that we may be able to duplicate it. See Support.Testing Your Program LogicSince the compiler implements the ANSI C language, a common method of programdevelopment is to use a PC compiler such as Borland C or Visual C and debug yourprogram logic first by compiling your program as a PC program. Obviously, hardwarespecificportions must be isolated and replaced or stubbed out using dummy routines.Typically, 95% or more of your program's code can be debugged using this method.If your program fails seemingly randomly with variables having strange values or thePC (program counter) in strange locations, then possibly there are memory overwritesin your program. You should make sure that pointer variables are pointing to validmemory locations and that the stack(s) are not overwriting data memory.40
ICCV8 for AVR – C Compiler for Atmel AVRListing FileOne of the output files produced by the compiler is a listing file of the name.lst. The listing file contains your program's assembly code as generated bythe compiler, interspersed with the C source code and the machine code and programlocations. Data values are not included, and library code is shown only in theregistered version.Filenames with .lis extensions are assembler output listing files and do not containfull information and should generally not be used.41
