Flash Function<br />

off when taking underwater<br />
pictures, unless<br />
you are shooting in<br />
perfectly clear water at<br />
close-up shooting distance<br />
inside of 3 ft/1m<br />
or using the optional<br />
external flash accessory.<br />
Keeping the flash<br />
turned OFF or using<br />
the optional flash<br />
accessory reduces<br />
backscatter (figure 1).<br />
Backscatter refers to<br />
the small dots that<br />
appear in underwater<br />
pictures, which occurs<br />
because the tiny particles<br />
suspended on the<br />
water are illuminated<br />
by the camera’s flash.<br />
Keeping the flash ON<br />
increases backscatter<br />
(figure 2).<br />
