We Sustain SuccessWe sustain success – for our business and the people we serve – by stayingtrue to key tenets upon which our company was founded over a century ago:innovative care and a desire to make a meaningful difference in all that we do.Building a business that achieves healthy growth year afteryear requires us to look outside our company to the peopleour work affects, in the communities where we live andwork, and to many other stakeholders around the world.In <strong>2004</strong>, our total social investment from the <strong>Abbott</strong> Fund,corporate philanthropy, patient assistance programs,humanitarian relief and AIDS-related programs reachedmillions of people worldwide with a total value of more than$300 million, up from $225 million in 2003.Access to Our Products: U.S. ProgramsSeveral <strong>Abbott</strong> programs help patients in the United Stateswho are uninsured, financially disadvantaged and noteligible for publicly funded prescription coverage:<strong>Abbott</strong> Patient Assistance ProgramOur Patient Assistance Program (PAP) provides freemedicines to low-income individuals who do not have ordo not qualify for prescription drug benefits through privateinsurance or government-funded programs, such asMedicaid, Medicare or AIDS Drug Assistance Programs.Since this program launched in 1996, <strong>Abbott</strong> has providedfree medicines to hundreds of thousands of patients. In<strong>2004</strong>, the <strong>Abbott</strong> PAP assisted more than 190,000patients and provided free medicines valued atapproximately $126 million.Humira Medicare Assistance ProgramThe Humira Medicare Assistance Program (MAP) providesHumira, <strong>Abbott</strong>’s rheumatoid arthritis medicine, at no costto Medicare-eligible patients who do not have prescriptiondrug coverage. In <strong>2004</strong>, <strong>Abbott</strong>’s Humira MAP assistedmore than 10,000 patients and provided free Humira valuedat approximately $109 million. This program is available toeligible Medicare enrollees without prescription drug coverageuntil a Medicare drug benefit is enacted.Expanded Medicare Assistance Program<strong>Abbott</strong>’s Expanded Medicare Assistance Programprovides significant cost savings on <strong>Abbott</strong> medicines forlow-income seniors and other eligible Medicarebeneficiaries. <strong>Abbott</strong> has partnered with governmentapproveddrug-discount programs to offer a number of<strong>Abbott</strong>’s chronic-care prescription medicines for a flat,monthly price. Enrollees who have exhausted their $600annual Medicare credit are eligible for the $5 and $12monthly prescriptions offered through <strong>Abbott</strong>’s ExpandedMAP and administered through participating Centers forMedicare & Medicaid Services-endorsed discount cards.The program, introduced in June <strong>2004</strong>, provides interimassistance to Medicare beneficiaries until Medicare’svoluntary prescription drug coverage becomes availablein 2006.Beyond <strong>Abbott</strong>’s initiatives, we continue to collaborate withother pharmaceutical companies to help expand access tomedicines in the United States.40
