Contributing NutritionalExpertise in ChinaA Conversation With Xiaotong Zhao, Director, Regulatory Affairs,<strong>Abbott</strong> China, Shanghai, ChinaHow is China addressingnutritional issues?The Chinese government is working to update its nutritional regulatory codes to harmonize China’sregulations with international standards as part of the accession to the World Trade Organization, as well asto ensure food safety and meet nutritional goals.How does <strong>Abbott</strong> partnerwith China’s regulatoryagencies?We were invited to participate as part of an expert advisory team of Chinese and international companies tohelp the government revise the National Standard of the People’s Republic of China as it relates tonutritional regulations. Our participation is valued because we have a deep understanding of regulatoryprocesses around the world. In <strong>2004</strong>, this led to two regulatory revisions, GB7718, General Standard for theLabeling of Prepackaged Foods, and GB13432, General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foodsfor Special Dietary Uses. More revisions will likely follow.How else does <strong>Abbott</strong> workwith the Chinesegovernment on medicalnutrition?In <strong>2004</strong>, <strong>Abbott</strong> worked to lower tariffs on medical nutrition products to the benefit of consumers. <strong>Abbott</strong>also funded and supported an economic enteral nutrition study in China with 1,400 patients. This researchhas been useful to the Chinese government in its revision of the product registration process, which is partof an overall effort to improve consumer access to medical nutrition products.Our objective is to continue to be a valuable partner in helping the Chinese government attain nutrition goalsfor the world’s most populous nation.44
