The research mightyield a lead compound inthe treatment of intestinal cancer. Stem cells in the gutcontinuously provide new tissue. Hans Clevers succeededearlier in identifying and isolating these stem cells. Togetherwith Madelon Maurice (UMC Utrecht) and Albert Heck (UU,NPC), the Clevers group searched for genes which are onlyactive in the intestinal stem cells. They found RNF43. TheD&A store travels through the Netherlands until April 2013 andtries to acquaintance as many people as possible with DNA.Visitors can experience DNA, not just as a genetic profile, butas a lifestyle. Weijers is abiochemist and developmental biologistand he is involved in NPC’s Research Theme ‘ProteomeBiology of Plants’ (T2). Weijers (1976) studied biochemistry atthe Hogeschool Enschede and in 2002 received his PhD on thehormonal control of embryo development in plants from theUniversity of Leiden. His studies focus on initial constructionof stem cells in plant embryos. For his work on the constructionof tissues and stem cells in plants-embryos he received aVIDI grant from NWO (2006) and an ERC Starting Grant (2011).He is also a member of the Young Academy - KNAW.Dialogue betweenscience & societyThe CSG Centre for Society and the LifeSciences invites all interested to ShakingScience!: the event to meet the lifesciences. This high-sensitive instrument might play a crucialrole in the development and use of therapeutic antibodies.In close collaboration with the research group of AlexanderMakarov of Thermo Fisher, the inventor of the Orbitrapanalyser, the reseachers show that protein assemblies ofmolecular weights over 1 million Da can be analysed with veryhigh analytical resolving power and exquisite sensitivity downto detection of single ions. The new mass spectrometer allowsthe measurement of a range of important proteins and proteinassemblies allowing a detailed analytical footprint of thesebiologically and medically important molecules. Especiallyin the fast-growing arena of biopharmaceuticals (e.g.therapeutic antibodies) this new instrument will be importantboth in research & development and in quality control, toenable such molecularly complex biomolecules to be usedsafely in the clinic.Heck: “This new mass spectrometer opens up avenues tomeasure not only protein-protein interactions, but alsocovalent and non-covalent binding of small molecules toprotein assemblies.
