<strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Statistics</strong> <strong>2013</strong>FOREWORD<strong>Energy</strong> is critical, directly or indirectly, in the entire process of evolution, growth and survival ofall living beings and it plays a vital role in the socio-economic development and human welfare ofa country. <strong>Energy</strong> has come to be known as a `strategic commodity’ and any uncertainty about itssupply can threaten the functioning of the economy, particularly in developing economies.Achieving energy security in this strategic sense is of fundamental importance not only to India’seconomic growth but also for the human development objectives that aim at alleviation ofpoverty, unemployment and meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Holisticplanning for achieving these objectives requires quality energy statistics that is able to address theissues related to energy demand, energy poverty and environmental effects of energy growth.This publication titled “<strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Statistics</strong>” is brought out every year by Central <strong>Statistics</strong> Office(CSO) and the present one is the 20th in the series. The publication contains the latest dataavailable from the concerned line Ministries of the Government of India, in respect of differentenergy sources and a brief analysis of the data on reserves, installed capacity, potential forgeneration, production, consumption, import, export and wholesale price of different energycommodities. An overview of the energy deficit scenario and development perspective has beenincluded in this publication as new featureAnalytical indicators viz. Growth Rates, Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGR), PercentageDistributions, has been provided in relevant tables to increase the utility of the publication. Anenergy balance (Table 7.2) included in the publication gives a more complete picture of the gapbetween supply and use of energy by various sectors/industries. However, <strong>Energy</strong> Balance is stillin evolution stage and needs more work to be at par with international requirements forcompilation of energy balances.I take this opportunity to convey my thanks to the cooperation of Ministry of Petroleum andNatural Gas, Central Electricity Authority, Office of Coal Controller, Ministry of New andRenewable <strong>Energy</strong> and Office of the Economic Advisor, Ministry of Commerce and Industry whohave timely provided the requisite information for this publication.
