<strong>The</strong> Roma Journeys<br />

<strong>The</strong> Roma, Sinti, Calé and o<strong>the</strong>r ethnic groups collectively referred to as Gypsies form <strong>the</strong> largest minority in Europe.<br />

Scattered across <strong>the</strong> globe <strong>the</strong>y live in almost every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, each group marked by a distinct language,<br />

culture and situation. Throughout <strong>the</strong>ir history, <strong>the</strong> Roma have been subjected to persecution, expulsions across<br />

Europe, slavery in Romania, prohibition on <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romany language, and o<strong>the</strong>r creative attempts to misuse,<br />

assimilate or extinguish <strong>the</strong>ir people. Many Roma still have to deal with discrimination on various levels, and in all<br />

European countries, <strong>the</strong> general attitude towards <strong>the</strong>m is at least suspicious.<br />

Cia Rinne and Joakim Eskildsen travelled to meet Roma in seven different countries between 2000 and 2006, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

staying with families for long periods in order to learn about <strong>the</strong>ir life, <strong>the</strong>ir culture, and <strong>the</strong>ir situation. <strong>The</strong> Roma<br />

Journeys is a very personal document <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se encounters, giving a contemporary view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roma<br />

people and <strong>the</strong>ir situation today.<br />

Joakim Eskildsen was born in Copenhagen in 1971 where he trained with <strong>the</strong> Royal Court photographer Rigmor<br />

Mydtskov. In 1994, he moved to Finland to learn <strong>the</strong> craft <strong>of</strong> photographic book-making with Pentti Sammallahti at <strong>the</strong><br />

University <strong>of</strong> Art and Design in Helsinki, graduating with an MA degree in photography in 1998. His publications<br />

include Nordic Signs (1995), Bluetide (1997), ChickenMoon (1999), which was awarded Best Foreign Title <strong>of</strong> 2000<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Photo-Eye Books & Prints Annual Awards, and <strong>the</strong> portfolio al-Madina (2002), which was made in collaboration<br />

with Krist<strong>of</strong>fer Albrecht and Pentti Sammallahti.<br />

Cia Rinne was born in Go<strong>the</strong>nburg in 1973, grew up in <strong>Germany</strong>, and holds an MA degree in philosophy from <strong>the</strong><br />

University <strong>of</strong> Helsinki. Apart from being <strong>the</strong> co-author <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> Eskildsen’s earlier books, she published zaroum, a<br />

collection <strong>of</strong> concrete poetry and conceptual writings in 2001. She is currently working on a documentary novel<br />

based on her time with <strong>the</strong> Roma.<br />
