The Mill

The Mill is a document of the living and working spaces of Hilla and Bernd Becher, a former papermill in Düsseldorf-
Kaiserwerth where the couple lived from 1961 to 2003. The photographs were made between February 2001 and
September 2002. Matthias P. Schaller’s photographs are portraits without the sitter.
Matthias Petrus Schaller was born in Dillingen (Germany) in 1965. He lives in Venice, Italy. He studied Cultural
Anthropology in Hamburg, Göttingen and Siena. Schaller received the Ci Art Award 2004. His work has been
exhibited in New York at the Goethe Institut, as well as at the Architectural Biennale in Venice.
